I took letrozole ( femera ) for a few months and was also concerned with the birth defects I had read about. The RE stated the life of letrozole is short lived, you take it early enough in your cycle that by the time of conception it is out of your system.

I had no luck with the drug, but while on it, I felt ok. No bad side effects. I did ovulate once while on it versus clomid - I never did.

Good Luck !!!

I totally understand your concern, but Letrozole is perfectly safe to take as long as you are being closely monitored by your doctor. There is no possible way for it to cause birth defects when it is used properly.

I got a BFP on my first round of Letrozole and Metformin, but unfortunately it was a bad chromosomal match-up and we lost the little one. We ended up moving on to injectibles eventually, but I would still choose Letrozole over Clomid any day! Best of luck!!

When I was doing IUIs, I did 2 months with letrazole. My RE warned me that there was one study in Canada that showed higher rates of birth defects, but she explained that they weren't separating out those women who were taking it after they were already pregnant. She uses it for many of her patients and found it to be particularly successful. She's anxious for there to be more counter-studies to the Canadian one.

Good luck with your cycle!
