azoospermia and testosterone therapy

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting on an infertility board and I am not quite sure if I am in the right place or doing this right, so please bare with me.

My DH and I have been ttc for 9 months now. Dh has been using testosterone replacement therapy for about a year now. He has been using the cream for about 10 months and the injectables for about two months. When I did some research about it I found out that this can cause low sperm counts to azoospermic counts.

Dh went to get his SA done and low and behold he was diagnosed as having azoospermia. The urologist checked his blood work and it came back normal, even his testosterone count was normal (I don't know the exact number but it was higher then 256, which was his last number). He also had a urinalisys, which also came back normal.

My question is has anyone else ecountered this problem? If so what happened in your case? I am desperate to know if his SC will go back to normal, and if so how and when?

Sorry if I am asking questions that have already been answered, I am just feeling desperate and lost right now.

Thank you to anyone who can help.

Testosterone Replacement kills sperm....in order to raise testosterone in men ttcing the dr should try clomid or hcg....if you get him off the testosterone replacement his count may go up....can't promise it b/c it could be unrelated but def. worth a try!

If you go back and read posts in the Azoospermia thread by crob and Ash&theBoys, they were in the same situation where there husbands were on testosterone replacement and it stopped the production of sperm. Once they were taken off the t-replacement and started using hcg injections instead, they returned to normal sperm counts. Both were able to get pregnant naturally.

I hope this is a simple fix and that there isn't another cause of the azoospermia. Good luck to you!!

I responded in the larger azoo thread too but I forgot to ask what the sperm count was when your DH had the count of 256. Did you guys have it measured before hand?

For my DH he had been diagnosed with azoo prior to even having T levels tested. Once we did, his was only 151. He was placed on Androgel and it went up to over 900. Our RE is now putting him on Clomid after having been off the Androgel for a few months.

I agree with Kris that you do have some hope here for a return to normal or near normal counts. I hope your stay here on the azoo board is a very short one.

Thanks guys, his count was at zero when his Tcount was at 256, it may be higher with this new blood test. All that they told him was that it was at a normal range without giving him an exact number. I will call again tomorrow and find out what his exact results for his blood test were. Before he was on the T-replacement it was at 116.

We have and appiontment with Dr Lipshultz on the the 28th, so hopefully he will know what to do, according to crobs old posts he is very good.

I had an appointment to get my progesterone tested this week and I didn't go since I thought it was pointless after hearing about the azoo, now I wish I would have gone.

Thank you so much for answering me. SFbay, how long did it take for your DH's levels to return to normal?
