new, HELP!

Hello all,

I am new to this forum. My husband and I have been trying to concieve for two years now, and we just got the results on his semen analysis. We were told he needs to see a urologist next. Can anyone make sense of the numbers on his semen analysis? I am not sure how bad this really is.....

concentration: 20.5
motility: 29%
concentration motile: 5.9
total count: 22,000 (I am thinking this may be incorrect. shouldn't it be million?) It says on the results that normal values is 233.8, and his says 22.00 when the doc read the results over the phone she said 22,000 is his count and that normal was 233,000. Thats not correct is it????

Sorry, I am so confused. All this time I thought the problem was with me, when it was really him. For some reason, I never even thought it would be a problem with him...

Thanks!

Hi Mirandita,

Most sa's are confusing to read and it depends on how the lab measures. Some measure in cc's. So generally the results will be per 1cc. BUT - the total amount of semen might be more. So for example my DH's count is very low too. It said, 1 million. But that was 1 million per 1cc. So since there were 3cc's he had 3million sperm. Motility was 20% - so there were 600,000 good, swimming sperm. That is considered very low. Normal ranges I have heard are from 20-60 million. I would call the doctor back and have him re-explain, and also send you or the urologist a copy of the results, so they know what they are looking at. The urologist will probably have him do at least one other SA. Male Factor is more common that people think. Don't worry, you have options, it is just not as easy for some of us. I was shocked too when we found out. Good Luck!!
