TTC #2, now no sperm there! Anyone else??

Hi everyone~ I just found this site researching some information on azoospermia (sp????) and I am thrilled to be able to communicate with others in similar situations. Here is some background info:
  • My name is Melissa and my husband is Keith.
  • We are both 28 and live in NJ.
  • We have a 3 1/2 year old son, Ashton, who was conceived within our FIRST MONTH OF TTC!!!! My husband also has an 8 year old son from a previous relationship.
  • We have been TTC #2 for 22 months now - went to the fertility clinic about a year ago and found out that Keith has no sperm at all in his semen.
  • Keith has been seeing a urologist who first diagnosed an enlarged prostate and put him on meds - that didn't work. Then he diagnosed a blockage somewhere and Keith underwent surgery in September - that didn't work either! He just had the most recent semen analysis last Friday and that showed still no sperm at all.
  • Our fertility doc referred us to a different urologist, one who specializes in male infertility, to have a testicular biopsy to see if there is any sperm in there. Of course, the appt. isn't until Feb. 9th and we're dying to know what the problem is!
Is there anyone else out there whose husband/partner has fathered children before and now has azoospermia!?!?! We are at a loss as to what the problem could be. His testosterone production is normal so he must be producing sperm in the testicles, right? We're thinking that they're still must be a major blockage somewere. We feel like we are the only ones in the world with this problem! Could there be a chance of testicular cancer? We are so worried and upset!
Thanks for listening,
Melissa

Hi Melissa,
I have a similiar situation, my husband and I concieved in Sept. (it ended in an ectopic pregnancy) then he had a semen analysis in Oct. and Nov. and both came back no sperm, We have just started with a Male fertility Urologist who is doing a sperm aspiration, almost the same as a testicular biopsy, the only difference is the handling of the sample. With the Biopsy if they find sperm they can't do anything with it (it will just tell you he is producing it). I'm going to be doing IVF (due to stage 4 endo) so the doc. wants to do the aspiration b/c if they find sperm they can freeze it for my ivf cycle a he doesnt have to do it twice. However we are still going through tests on what couls be causing the sudden lack of sperm. My husbands blood tests showed all hormones including testesterone normal, however his fsh level was slightly elevated. He also had undescended tsticles as a child that were corrected with surgery, so he has a lot of possible causes but we are still in the proccess of finding the exact one. He had a sonogram done on his testicles that checked the blood flow, size and to make sure there were no masses, everything was clear. But I know how frustrating and nerve racking this is, expecially since it was there one minute and gone the next, just be patient, Im sure you will get to the bottom of it all... Good Luck with everything!

Yeah, we are headed down the IVF route as well. I just can't bear to wait anymore than 22 months! Our appt. on Feb. 9th is just a consult with the new urologist actually. Hopefully on that visit we will discuss if they will just be doing the biopsy to "check" or if we will be freezing sperm for IVF. That is what our fertility doc suggested so hopefully the sperm will be in there so we can do it!
Thanks for responding, it's nice to hear that someone else is in a similar situation.
