Exclamation low sperm count/abnormal morphology

Ok, I have stumbled upon this forum today, when it is desperately needed! My DH and had started our general testing, and our nurse called today with his SA - Sperm count is at 9.4 million/mL and his Morphology is very abnormal, only 1% was normal. This is all so quick, I am trying to understand what it means. My OBGYN cancelled all my additional appointments (we'd already tested that I was ovulation correctly) and sent me straight to the fertility specialist. So needless to say, I am a little freaked out. What are our chances? What are our options? I have been trying to find similar situations, so I thought I'd try this thread so someone might could help me, be it good, bad or ugly. Help!

This is NOT terrible news. Your numbers are better than my husbands. We only had 2 million swimmers, poor motility and also 1% morphology. After years of trying we Finally figured this out. RE said our best chance was IVF. Our first IVF worked and we have our miracle baby. I think with your sperm count your RE may recommend an iui first, or not, but your odds with ivf could be fantastic!! Best of luck.

Thank you so much! I've just had such a horrible day - with us being mid-20's, I just never expected this to happen! And after I posted the thread, I spoke with my insurance company and they do pay half for artificial insemination - which is half more than I expected! So I get to see a few glimmers of light. I guess it's just the shock right now, no one wants this. It is supposed to be easy, you try a few months and get that plus sign - to bad life gets in the way!

My husband has 0-1% morphology and they recommended that we go straight to IVF. His count was just slightly low, but the morphology was the major issue.

Good luck to you

Morphology is sterile?

Well we're doing ivf because of my husbands low sperm count history. We had him retested again a couple of weeks ago and again he had a low sperm count. Then the re tells us that his morphology was 19% and this was very close to being sterile which was 14%. I was actually devasted when she mentioned the word sterile but she explained that we were going in the right direction. I'm still worried on our success because I've read morphology affects the success of ooyctes. Not sure but I just wanted to tell you ladies my story.

Hi ladies.
ashxl: I'm not sure what method your DH morphology was measured but a normal person has between 5%-10% morphology I was told by my RE. I believe my clinic uses the Strict method. Sounds like maybe your DH was checked using a different method.

Well the first time my DH was checked it was 4%. My OB said to take the test over again just to be sure. So I had him cut out his caffiene completely, drink more water, and take megaman vitamins from GNC. Well, the second time we tested it was only 2%! So anyway, the fertility center said to start IUI which we are now on round two and I am 2 dpiui right now. Well now that my DH is back to taking care of himself just like he always has, his morphology is back up to 4%. Maybe his sperm likes caffiene too or something..lol.

ahgraves: Don't give up hope! You will eventually have the baby you've always wanted. I am trying 3 rounds of IUI's and then if that doesn't work we are moving on to IVF. I hope the IUI's work, they are only about $400 each time. The IVF would be around $10,000! Good luck to you ahgraves. Find a good fertility clinic and they will be able to help you.

my husband's sperm count was only 2million/ml and normal forms are below normal. he was asked by our doctor to inject pregnyl 5000iu 3x a week for 3 weeks to be followed by 50iu puregon to injected 3x a week for 1 week. after a month, is sperm count became 10million/ml. however, after another month, his count dropped again to 2million/ml. now is undergoing the same medication, but the dosage of puregon was increased to 100iu. we are now only aiming for a 10milliom/ml sperm count before we undergo for an IUI. do we have a better success rate at IUI with a 10million/ml count? i am starting to get really frustrated

TracyB, my DH's sperm count is high, his morphology is low, only 1%, we have tried IUI twice, and have been trying to get PG for over a year now. Where did you hear about Mega Man Vitamins? Have low morphology men had success with this? does anyone know of success stories using these vits?

My hubby tried the GMN fertility blend for men. He was taking it for about 5 months and there was absoulutely no change in his SA. Still at 0% morphology.

low count

Okay guys, just stumbled to this site and found it interesting in the sense that am really getting worried after 4years of marriage and no issue to show for. Just did another test which is not funny any longer, but one needs a solution to this on wanted problem. Result - Motility: 3%, morphology 30 normal, S.C: 2.OMILLION CELLS. WHAT DO YOU ADVISE?.

beregha - my DH's counts have ranged from 4-12M....our RE only recommended IVF w/ ICSI - our 1st was BFN, then we pushed for an IUI because of $$ and it was BFN too (with 12M and 7M back-to- back).....he has took different supplements (Fertility Blend, Fertiity Aid, royal jelly w/ bee pollen) and we have not had much difference.

So my recommendation: if you have the $$, skip IUI and go straight to IVF.

Hi ladies! Just a quick update. I initially posted about 6 months ago, and it's definately been an emotional rollercoaster! But 2 failed IUI's later (and finding out that my DH produces antibodies to his sperm) we are moving on to IVF. The good news - my insurance covers 50% of procedures and 85% of medications!! Such a blessing! So now I'm trying to find success rates for IVF with ICSI when the female is young and appears completely fertile. Any suggestions?
