My understanding is you have to do IVF if you are doing a sperm retrieval. Because the sprem in the testicle don't have tails they can't swim to the egg. In IUI (which we are doing) the sperm is put into the uterus (bypassing the cervix) and giving them a better chance to swim and meet up with the egg. So yes you can do surgical retrevial but you can't do IUI with it.
