Will CAVD be passed onto son?

Hi Everyone,

My wife and I went through an IVF/ICSI cycle this past summer. Thankfully we were blessed with four viable embryos. We transferred one and we're expecting a daughter in April. To say we're over the moon with joy would be a vast understatement.

We reached the point of IVF/ICSI because I have CAVD, as a result of a cystic fibrosis genetic mutation. I don't have CF mind you, but I am a carrier of the mutation. My wife was tested for the CF gene and she came up negative, so we were good to procede with our cycle.

We don't want to get ahead of ourselves since baby No. 1 won't be here for a few more months, but in the long haul, we're hoping to transfer one or two of the remaining embryos in hopes of future successful pregnancies. I fear though that if a future transfer resulted in a boy, he may be born with the same CAVD that I've lived with unknowingly for so long.

If I read all of the information correctly, there is a 25 percent chance of passing the mutated gene onto offspring. So if a future attempt yielded a boy, and he did obtain the mutated gene, does it guarantee that he would also have CAVD?

Thanks!

Hi there!
My DH also has CBAVD. We have 2 dd's from 2 different IVF cycles. We are now struggling to say the least to have another baby.
However, from what I have read I was under the impression that passing CBAVD was less than 3%. To get an exact percentile I would consult a urologist or even your fertility clinic. I honestly do not ever remember reading that it was 25%.

We would love a healthy child...son or daughter. My husband said early on in our IVF life...knowing he has this condition he still is happy to be alive and have his life. I would hate to have a son go through what we have had to to have babies BUT so many advances have been made in the 10 years since we started IVF...I can't imagine what 30 years will bring.
Wishing you the best of luck with your baby to be!

I was also under the impression that simply passing the gene does not mean passing the actual CBAVD...your son however could pass the gene causing CBAVD. We know of NOBODY in DH family with this condition.
I also am negative for CF gene.

We just found out DH has that same mutation that causes the CAVD. I was screened and I don't have the CF gene. We were sent to a geneticist to talk about it. He said that if we have a son it's a 50% chance of passing it to him. But in my own calculation, I thought/think it's 25%. Not sure.

He said that b/c of that chance, they will test out future baby for more than the usual number of gene mutations when he/she is born.

I would like to know b/c it could save him from all the heartache and testing we did to find out.

Btw, DH is the first that we know of in his entire family to have this mutation. His mom is mad b/c she just doesn't understand how or why it happened. She's old-fashioned with Drs. and says they are wrong. I wish. The RE said with my DH it was the luck of the draw...a toss up of genes that resulted in him being the first.

Our Story:

Me:31: healthy
DH:30: extremely low count & motility

**Aug 2012: SA-less than 30k washed! less than 1% motility
**Sept 2012: RE orders bloodwork on DH
**DH on Androgel & vitamins
**Sept 2012: DH testerone levels good
**Oct 30: sperm improved some.1.5mil unwashed! 9% motility. DH's chromosomes ok.RE recommends ICSI. DH a CF carrier
**Nov 16 visit: My bloodwork is all good, not a carrier, hormones ok
**Visit w/Geneticist: found out DH's particular CF mutation causing the absence/defect of vas deferens. An answer! Will need ICSI

My husband has no vas deferens, but we are not sure if it is CAVD or surgery related.

Anyway, I agree with Michelle. Even if it is something that you pass on, it is very minor compared to the many other things that can go wrong. I can't imagine that by the time our children are of child-bearing age, there won't be a much easier solution for infertility. I would also think that as long as any son of yours knew that it was a possibility before he began trying to conceive, it would save him a lot of the grief and heartache that most of us have had to go through just trying to figure out our diagnosis.

Best of luck and congratulations on your daughter!!
