Thoughts/Opinions on SA please

Hi,

Wife and I have been TTC for a year, though really not hardcore. More like if it happened, it happened. It hasn't. So I went in and got tested first since it's easier and these are the results:

Viscosity: 4
PH 7.2
Motility: 54
Concentration: 185.5 M/ML
Total Count: 315.4 Million
Total Motile: 170.3 Million
Normal Forms: 7%
Neutrophils: 1
Immature Germ Cell: 3

Obviously my morphology is low but my sperm count and concentration and motility is way above normal...does all that compensate for the morphology? Anyone have any luck conceiving with similar numbers? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I cannot comment much on the results..but here is what I know:
viscosity <2 is considered normal
ph should be betwen 7.4-8.5
motility >50% is good so u r OK on that
normal forms >30% is considered normal.

However ,I am not a doctor. It just what my lab technician told me and it may be slightly different for different labs.I would suggest asking your lab to explain the results to you.In my opinion, count ,concentration and motility cannot compensate for poor morphology.Morphology refers to the sperms health and structure. No matter how many there are and how mobile they may be,if they do not have good morphology, they might not work. But that does not mean there is no chance at all..Its all a game of probability and chance. All the best!

See but that doesn't make sense to me. The average count on this lab was 40 million sperm. If normal morphology is 30%, that's 12 million normal healthy sperm.

If my count is 315 million, though, and only 7% of that is normal, that means I have 22 million normal healthy sperm.

Or is there some kind of mathematical equation I'm missing?

I did the math too and agree with you but that's just me. Someone recently mentioned a supplement sold at GNC that is supposed to boost up the swimmers, you might want to check that out.

For the most part your numbers look great, yes your morphology is low. 7% means if they look at 100 sperm there are only 7 normal. My DH's original SA revealed just 1/100 normal, now we are at 8/100. So while your count may be stellar you need to take into consideration how many of those are normal shaped and thus able to penatrate the egg. Your odds still look pretty good considering your count. Did you have a urologist do this? They are very good about explaining everything to you.

No, just my family doctor. He said he'd refer me to a urologist to reassure me but he said he's seen numbers much worse than mine and that in the end, it only takes one.

My wife's going to go in and get some tests done, though she had some preliminary a year or so ago and there doesn't seem to be any problems there. We bought an ovulation kit so she can start tracking that and I bought some vitamins I read about online to try and help with the morphology. Which depending on where you read may or may not help...but I guess it can't hurt. I already take a One a Day multivitamin but maybe I need an extra kick.

Probably go in and get tested in 3 months again...kind of hoping I just had an off day with the morphology. Maybe 3 months ago on that day I tipped one too many back and my boys came out sloshed!

Hi!

What my RE told us was that anything greater than 40 million total count is good, motility should be above 50% and morphology should be above 14%. Anything lower than that on any of the three and they recommend doing IUI.

Male Infertility

Hi - I am sort of new to this board, because until today, we didnt't really think we had a male issue. My husband had a morphology of about 8%. They told me that wsn't too bad and that we could still move forward with IUI because his count was good. Today he went to see a urologist and the urologist found he had low testosterone and a vericole ( I know I didn't spell that right). The doctor put him on Clomid and said we won't know for three months if they need to do surgery to fix it. Does the urologist realize how LONG three months is to a 37 1/2 TTC woman?????? UGH.

Feedback please?? I've read that the surgery doesn't work. I am not sure that the IUI will work either and I am tired of throwing money in the toilet.!
