Calcium Channel Blockers

I have been on a calcium channel blocker for several years now and just learned they can affect male fertility. It is a reversible effect. I plan to stop taking them but am trying to find out how long it takes to reverse any problems these medications cause.

Ok. I'm no expert. But from reading a little about calcium channel blockers I found...

It is thought that calcium channel blockers interfere with the fertilization process. Specifically, they seem to prevent sperm from being able to penetrate an egg. However, switching to another type of hypertension medication is usually sufficient to restore fertility.

So from this I would assume that you just need to wait long enough for new sperm to mature AFTER your last dose of calcium channel blockers. It takes 72 days for sperm to mature.

Also, I found this article. It's a little wordy, but it agrees that you should see some improvement within 3 months! Pregnancy following discontinuation of a calcium channel blocker in the male partner -- Hershlag et al. 10 (3): 599 -- Human Reproduction

A few tips while you are waiting...

- Avoid Baths and Saunas. Heat causes major damage to sperm.
- Boxers not Briefs.
- Avoid bicycles, this has been known to affect motility
- Possibly buy some fertility vitamins. You can find out more about this through a natural health food store, your local pharmacy, and maybe online somewhere.
