Very Confused - Azoospermia

Hello - we are new to the group and are so glad to have found you. I am 34 and my wife is 32. We had one child which it took us only 3 months to conceive - born in July 2004. We live a nightmare as he passed away unexpectedly at age 2, back in 09/06 for unknown causes (SIDS is the closest answer that we have gotten). Since 11/06, we have been trying to conceive with no success. In May we went to our FP and he suggested a semenalysis. The results revealed azoospermia - this was back on 6/19. We were referred to a urologist and have been through the various tests including retrograde ejaculation, hormone testing (results - FSH 6.36, Testosterone 237, LH 2.1), aspiration of the seminal vesicles revealed no sperm, prostate ultrasound revealed no blockage.

As you can see, we have been through the ringer in the past year and this is just adding to the nightmare. Just met with another Urologist this past Monday and he is scheduled a TESE. He has been very indecisive on what he may find. Anyone have any thoughts on what our chances may be?

Any ideas on what can cause this since we were successful just 2 years ago?

Thank you so much.
Brian

Brian! I am so so very sorry about the lost of your son. I know this story is going to make a lot of women who are hopped up on fertility drugs cry-I am one of them!
How could this happen in 3 years? Did something happen to you during that time?
I wish I had some answers for you. I hope TESE is successful.

Best wishes...

Brian!

I am so sorry you lost your son- how terrible. I don't have any answers either, unfortunately. TESE is often successful though. This is a great place to come for support. Good luck to you both!

I am so, so sorry to hear about your son. You and your DW have obviously gone through so much and then to have this issue come up. I am assuming you haven't had any trauma to the region or anything. It does seem really odd that you would suddenly have no sperm. I hope they find answers for you.

Brian,
I am not even on meds this month and it is really difficult to stay strong & not cry right now. Reading your posts really scares me because I have a 2 1/2 year old. I will never forget the first few days following her birth. I would just watch over her as she slept in her basinett and cry to my DH. I was so afraid that she would die. I could hardly sleep at night as I layed awake listening to her breathe. My DH would say that we could not have been blessed with a more perfect baby. She will be fine. I know that you & DW were also blessed with a perfect baby. SIDS can not be predicted. This is what I didn't want to explain to DH as he continued to sleep so peacefully at night. You have been through the worst thing imaginable. I am so sorry for your loss.

From reading others posts on this forum it seems like many couples have allot of success with TESE & IVF with ICSI. I think it would be very helpful for you & DW to see an Reproductive Endocrinologist at this point.

Best of luck to both of you.

Me - age, 28
Hubby - age, 34
Dx - unknown at this point

Oct. 2001 - TTC

May 2004 - 1st IVF cycle , but resulted in an ectopic , 2, 2 day embies transferred, no leftovers

Sept 2004 - 2nd IVF cycle ! - 2, 5 day blasts transferred - 3, 6 day blastocyst leftover for freezing

June 2005 - Baby Girl Born ... 2 hour
unmedicated labor. The universe paid back for all those proj shots that day. Though it was painful it was fast & furious. Best night of my life!

Sept 2007 FET - all 3 blasts thawed - 2, 6 days blasts transferred -

Oct 24th - 1st IUI (no meds)
Oct. 30th - b/w to check projes.
Nov. 9th - beta, if AF hasn't arrived yet.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss!

I'm not an expert in this field, but I think that your extreme stress and great tragedy resulted in your azoospermia.
Sometimes, when we lose somebody we loved or were bound to, we suffer in a way that conventional medicine cannot explain.

I went to see the shrink because of my problem (very low sperm count) and she explained and revealed it to me that the sudden loss of my mother could have triggered the reproductive system to shut down or to work with greatly reduced capacity.

I think that losing your own child or your loved one with no apparent reason is one of the worst tragedies a man can experience, therefore I wouldn't be surprised if you started being azoospermic after that nightmare.

I'm really sorry about your son!! But try to keep going on!

Brina,
I am so sorry for your loss. I can not imagine what you and your wife have been through.
My husband and I are going through a similar situation. We have a daughter (we conceived her in one month) who will be 2 in March and have been trying to conceive for 7 months. Too make a long story short my husband has done two semen analysis that have both resulted in azoospermia. Hi is a healthy 28 year old. They did the battery of blood tests, ultrasound, etc. and found nothing. We are now being referred to a fertilitly specialist. I wish I had some answers for you but just know that you are not alone.
I'm new at this so can anyone tell me what TESE & ICSI stand for?
Thanks!

Brian, i am so sorry for the loss of your son. I cannot even imagine the pain that you and your wife feel. my husband is also azoospermic, but he has never had a child. Is your testosterone in the normal range? It seems a little low. It would seem strange to me for you to have had sperm and all of a sudden, nothing. Have you taken antibiotics yet? Sometimes there can be bacteria in the testes that can change sperm production. Was your sperm count 0? Does your urologist specialize in infertility? There is a thread that you can ask more questions on. It is the Azoospermia thread. All of the people on that thread have husband's who have been diagnosed with azoospermia.

I wich you all the best and I'm sorry this has happened to you.

Hi Natalie, welcom e to the forum! I saw your post on the azoospermia thread. The link below contains really great information on azoospermia and different ways of obtaining sperm. It also explains the ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) process.
