detecting infertility

My boyfriend recently told me that it will be hard for him to have children in the future. He wasn't specific as to why, and I thought it might be a touchy subject, so I didn't pry, but it seems like there is more to the story than he is letting on. A friend suggested he was lying so I wouldn't make him wear a condom during sex. He said he found out when he was 18, from a physical exam. My question was is it possible to find out from a regular checkup or would he have had to been trying to have children to find out?

I don't know that a physical exam would tell the whole story. There might have been something iffy with the exam and that prompted the remark but there is so much more involved. Unless you do plan on getting pregnant I suggest you continue to make him wear a condom and if he refuses tell him you want some sort of proof before you feel comfortable.

It is totally possible that he has some issue that might make things less that easy but it is hard to believe it would make it impossible. However, condoms protect against many things that could make a woman infertile forever.

If he was my boyfriend, I would ask if he was comfortable sharing with me the details of this medical condition. He may keep it to himself but you can always ask. You do deserve the right to know whether he had an infectious disease or STD. I'd ask. It could affect you.

Good luck!
