DH taking Arimidex???

Hi everyone!

My RE has prescribed Arimidex for my DH to help improve his overall sperm counts and I was wondering if any other DH's have had to take it?? When I look it up online it says it's used for women with breast cancer, so 1) not sure I can get insurance to cover this and 2) I don't know if he will take a medicine used for women with breast cancer!!!

I have heard of Clomid, but his FSH is already high and I read Clomid just makes it worse...so the RE wanted him on Arimidex instead. Just hoping to find some more information to help this go over easier since it will be tough to get him to do this anyway!

Thanks!!
Kristen

My DH takes it! His doctor, (Dr. Larry Lipschultz with Baylor College of Med here in Houston), prescribed it to him for low testosterone. I was shocked, because my mom took it for her breast cancer treatment, so I was surprised to learn that it had other uses. I'm not sure if I'm correct, but I believe it works by lowing the estradiol levels in males, thus helping to raise the testosterone. He's been on it for at least 6 months, and his count went from a low point of just over 3 million, all the way up to over 17 million! Of course he's been taking vitamins along the way too, but I think it's definitely helped!

My DH was on 3 months of Arimidex before our third (and successful!) IVF. He was on it again this go-around as well along with 3 months of antioxidants (2 huge pills 2x/day). We'll see what happens--I have my ET this week!

By the way, my DH did not have any noticeable side effects from the meds.

Thank you both for your replies!!! I'm praying it will work!! Unfortunately, he'll only get two months on it before our next IVF/ICSI attempt so hopefully that is enough!! So far he hasn't any weird reactions to the meds! LOL!

MrsByrd03 - I live in Houston also, is that dr an RE or a urologist? We wanted to get another urologist opinion on my DH if this cycle doesn't work out so I was just curious!!

Thank you!

He's a urologist and we would HIGHLY recommend him. He's the one who did DH's vasectomy reversal. We LOVE him to death! :-) I can give you his contact information if you would like.
