Sperm Count & Morphology question

DH had his S/A done last month and his results were:

55 million count
45% motility
15% Morphology

My OB dr. referred us to an RE because he was concerned that the morphology was not favorable to us having a child naturally and he also worried about miscarriages. However, the RE seemed to act like 15% morphology was no big deal?? Due to our ages, we are going ahead with the IUI but I was wondering if anyone else has a similar situation?

Also, I'm a bit worried that although 55 million is within the normal range...I've read a lot of people on here have DHs with over 100 million and still are unsuccessful with IUI.

I guess I'm just worried and looking for the answer "can this really happen for us"? It's just so hard because everyone I know has had no problems having a baby right away (for most, within the first couple of months of ttc)...and it's just not happening for me and DH.

Any thoughts or insight about DH's sperm analysis would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and to all!

My husband's morphology, at last check, was 8% before our IVF. We do now have an almost 5 month old son that we conceived naturally. The only difference was that we both started taking Fertility Blend in early 2007 while we were trying naturally and saving for adoption. However, I can't say whether the Fertility Blend really made a huge difference on his morphology, motility or count because we didn't go back for another semen analysis. I just know that we started taking it in January and found out in March we were pregnant, lost that pregnancies due to it being ectopic, then starting taking it again in April and started trying again when I ovulated June 29th and the rest is history. There are options, it is possible - never give up on your dream!

Thanks Jenedens, that certainly gives me some hope that it may happen for us. I have heard about the fertility blend and may try it out if this IUI fails for us. The expense is so great and the heartbreak will be even worse if it doesn't happen for us...so fertility blend may be our only hope to continuing to try naturally without the medical expense.

Thanks for your insight and inspiring story!

Hi, my husband and I have had similar results. Our first results were Motility 50%, Morphology 4% - Kruger criteria. Our second results were Motility 30%, Morphology 9%. We have been told that something as insignificant as a cold can have a huge difference on a SA. If you go to a urologist they will probably have you repeat the SA just to make sure there wasn't an oops. When we went to the urologist he found a vericosele - which is like a varicose vein in the testicle which causes the temperature to be high which can affect the development of sperm. We have tried everything that you can think of to get pregnant naturally - Fertility Blend included. Nothing worked for us. My husband had surgery last week to remove the vericosele and we have a 60% that that will solve our problem...if not we will move onto ICSI or IVF. We will skip IUI because the success rates are very low. I found a great book "The Infertility Cure" which is about Chinese Traditional Medicine that has great suggestions for herbs to help boost SA counts ect. The only bad thing is that you will have to order that herbs online if you choose to go that route. I have my husband on Michael's Male Reproductive Factors and Cinnamon Twig. The Michael's vitamin I was told that if you don't get pregnant within three months - three bottle - you can get a refund if you keep the receipts and send them to the manufacturer. We haven't tried to send them in yet. Good luck - I know how tough it is and how horrible it is not to have a child when every one else has no problem getting pregnant. I did find a book - Unsung Lullabies - which is helpful to me, but it may or may not be for you. Hope I helped.

Is the 15% morphology strict (Kruger Method)? If so that's a great number, and if not, it's not so good. Who did your SA?

My DH had his SA done by a urologist and it showed 60% morphology overall. After 4 failed IUI's we had an SA done by an RE and it came back 3% strict, which is terrible.

I just ask b/c not all places due the Kruger Method. So we were kind of misled thinking we had good numbers when we did not.
