DH's SA results - low sperm

Dh had a SA done last year and the results were good except for some white blood cells. I didnt get the numbers because back then I didnt know what they meant. He had taken an anitboctic the pervious month so Doc wasnt worried about the white blood cells.
My doc ordered a follow up SA 2 weeks ago. I FINALLY got the results back and it isnt good. I couldnt get the numbers this time because my cell phone connection was so bad (I'm going to call back on my break later) but the nurse said his count was VERY low and my doc wants him to go to a urologist as soon as possible.

Is it possible the results are a fluke and his count was low that day for another reason? On top of all my stuff this just seems like another blow. This is going to be hard for DH to take. Anyone have any advise?

Ok here are the numbers

1st SA (July 07): 76 million

2nd SA (May 08): 500 thousand

That has to be wrong! Is it possible that since he hadnt "cleared" stuff out in over 10 days that that batch had already died and he just needed to start over?

yes it is possible that the sample was a fluke, especially with those great numbers the first round. when my DH had his SA done they gave him instructions of how long to abstain for and how long not to. I thought they liked a count when abstanance is only 3-5 days out.

Did they suggest coming in again?

My doctor wants DH to go to a urologist to be re-tested. DH is not real happy about it, he freaked out when I told him. I think it would be so much better on him, assuming it was a fluke, to just have my doctor order another SA and let DH just go to the lab.

DH is overly freaked out about doctors. He refuses to go no matter how sick he gets. And he dosent like anything that has to do with his "parts". After his first SA he was so embrassed he wouldnt look at me the rest of the day.

I told DH that we would wait at least until the end of my cycle since I started the 2ww yesterday. Maybe we got lucky and he wont have to go thru any of it.

My DH is the same with doctors and it makes it so difficult! He had 2 SA's in a row and both times the doctor said to abstain at a minimum of 2 days and no longer than 5 days. They specifically gave me the dates when he should release. I would try to see if your doctor will just order another SA. You are paying him right?

Hi. I agree with the other ladies. I think 10 days of abstinence might be too long. We were told 5-7 days, but not more than 7. Also, sometimes SA varies, so just have him retested. you only have two samples so you really don't know much about his SA. Just have him retested.
Good luck dear. Keep us posted how things go. Don't force your DH to go, but with lots of explanations, have him agree that this is a good idea. He will feel better about it. You know how men are... they are very proud of their menhood and if you tell them they there is something wrong with them and thell them what to do, they will fight back. I wish you all the best.
Good luck dear!
Hugs,

Thanks so much everyone. I do feel a little better about it now. And I think DH is going to be ok. My doc wants him to go to the urologist to re-test, so I went ahead and made DH an appt for the end of this month. I should have my BFP or had my AF visit by then. So we can either cancel the appt or have DH re-tested.

Hopefully they will just re-test him without an sort of examine. I really dont DH to go thru any embrassment or discomfort. Like you all said, men are so sensitive about that area.

For our SA we had a 2 day abstinance, anything longer than 2-3 days can decrease numbers, according to my RE. But I don't think it would make THAT big of a difference....see my numbers below, I am in a similar situation with normal counts last year and then really low counts this year. Doc said it could have been a virus/fever the other thing is a vein (variocele?? - I forget what its called, I'm sure its on this forum somewhere) that can develop on the scrotum and reduce numbers....that is why you are being told to consult a urologist, they are the ones that can check for that. It does involve an exam though....just so you know, that is the only way to see it! But you are doing the right thing....the more you can find out ahead of time, the less waiting/uncertainty/frustration you will both go through in the long term.
