Cousins w/ same middle name? Who cares?

Hi all! We are 13 wks pg and I have planned for years to honor my dad by naming a child after him. His name is James and if we have a boy I want it to be Levi James. My brother and sister-in-law also want to use the name James (for the same reason) as a middle name. I think my SIL is freaking out about this and seems to think they should have "dibs" b/c "since day one" my brother has said he wanted to name a child after Dad.

I say, it would be the middle name for both, IF we both have boys, and neither of us plan to call our child Jimmy or James anyway, so who cares? Would any of you be upset of your child shared a middle name witih his/her cousin? I love my dad and he has been a huge influence on my life and I think this would make him proud. And who's to say that my bro and SIL will even HAVE a boy? She's told me she's not even sure he wants to have more kids! (He has one boy from a long time ago, previous relationship, should've named that one James if you ask me.) Okay, I'm sounding really bitter now. It just upsets me b/c I am the one pg and having the baby and if anyone should be upset, I would think it would be me, not them! (And I'm not! My DH has a son named Alexander James. We'd already decided to go w/ James as a middle name in spite of this, b/c it's important to me.) What do all of you think??

Thanks for reading and letting me rant!

To me it is not a big deal - my husband and his brother both had the same middle name and now that is my son's middle name and if his brother has a son he will have the same middle name. It is their deceased mother's maiden name and it honors her and their family and nobody cares that it is shared. Especially if neither plans to call them by the middle name I don't think it is a big deal at all.

I don't see a problem with having 2 cousins share the same middle name or share a first and a middle. If they shared first, middle and last...that could be a problem. In my husband's family, virtually every male has the name Patrick some where in there.

It might help if you had a friendly conversation with your SIL and let her know that you think it would be great if your father had two grandsons that shared his name as he is so special.

I don't see it as a problem at all! My son's middle name is the same as DH's middle name, and it is also the same name that two of my brothers and my grandfather have. That is why we choose it b/c of strong family ties on both sides.

Our twin girls have the same middle name, Marie. It honors our mothers (Maria and Mary) who passed away. My niece has the same middle name and her mother (my sister) has it too. No big deal to any of us. Your SIL needs to chill.

In our families, Elizabeth is a common name. We gave our daughter that as a middle name and I don't see why it would be an issue.

Thanks, ladies. I think SIL is over it now, pretty much. They said just don't be surprised if they use it for a first name in the future. I don't care. My brother is almost 36 years old. It's not like he hasn't had time to do this before!

I would rather my dad have 2 kids named after him than none, if we saved the name for them to use and then they had a girl!!

Thanks for letting me vent!

I'm glad you aren't upset over it but it sounds petty to say "oh we'll just use it for the first name then" but hey whatever right?

I have a stinky suspicion my SIL is going to use our middle name (Jackson) as her son's first name (she is due before us) but I am still going to use it (after dh's g-pa) and I have let it be known we are using it. If it means something to you then go with regardless of what anyone else thinks :-)

The middle name we picked for our little girl is the same as my 5 year old niece. My SIL didn't seem to mind & my 5 year old niece thought it was cool her new cousin was going to share her middle name.
I think its perfectly fine.....You name your child the name you want.......

Good luck!!
