I agree...Bertha and Ronin are not the best choices.

Ronin kinda sounds like a name bestowed by parents who loved Lord of the Rings a little too much.

My brother suggested a name for a girl the other day. I didn't like it. It was Aspen.

Sounds a bit like Aspirin.

Ronan is a HUGELY popular Irish name. I have heard so many kids being named Ronan lately. It wouldn't be my first choice either - or my second for that matter, lol - but it is gaining popularity out here in NY again.

My husband wanted to name our daughter (should we ever have one) Adrena in honor of the baby girl his mother lost when he was about 10. Apart from not liking the name at all, our last name starts with L so in elementary school when everything has the child's first name, last initial, she would be Adrenal. Even though at that age the kids wouldn't really get it, I don't want the teacher snickering to herself.

this thread is too hilarious ... my DH's previous doc was Dr. Tite, pronounced like 'tight' but sure doesn't seem like it, lol.

just found this thread--hilarious.

When I was growing up, a boy I liked went to school with a Walter Melon.

This week, I just spoke with a "client" and her entire first name was Morning Glory------yup, I just stuck with the last name when I was talking with her.

Dorkus..............million dollars................Dorkus..........that's tuff, I might be the girls who go with the million and call her by her middle name. Then, put some of the money aside for the poor kid to go thru the name change process later in life.

I know of someone who is named Pam Ramsbottom. Some friends took bets who would be the first to ask her if her husband's name was Harry or if her daughter's name was Anita. We decided we liked to keep our jobs longer than that.

There was also another whose last name Harddick. Pronounced exactly how it looks.

I dont know, I think I would get a name change asap.

I deal internationally on a daily basis so run into some strange translations such the last name Diks hit (all one word). It just makes me wonder what my name translates to in another language!

On a similar line, I'm always interested in how common words translate to other languages. I have a friend from Micronesia who speaks 5 languages (so many dialects there) so not only could she tell funny stories about how those dialects have very horrible miscommonucations. Like the word chicken being the same as grandfather in another dialect. Imagine the confusion at dinner time

Also she stayed briefly on a street named Willeta, which happened to translate to 'what d ick'. They didn't stay there long. My favorite would be when her grandmother came to visit. She is a traditional woman who doesnt speak a bit of English. My friend took her to the mall and grandma was horrified as she walked by a large red shop sign that said K Momo. Momo being 'whore' in her own language...

However - having an entire weather forecast for children is a bit out there.

But a little more back on topic, I always have a difficult time picking names because I dont want anything too common or anything too ridiculous. Also I think people should shy away from really outrageous spellings of common names.

Ugh, I gotta say I am definitely icked out by the weird spellings of names... spelling a name weird doesn't make it unique... it just makes it a difficult time figuring out a common name. Jhuly, Aeryn, Mykal, Danyul, Shanyn... why not just go with classic spelling so your daughter can just be a classic beauty or your son can be a natural stud...

And as for Dorkus... I wouldn't mind calling her "Dee"... a million dollars would be a great college fund/house fund for her...

Dorcas, spelled right, is a Biblical name. My Husband's great-great Grandmother was named Dorcas. She went by Dee in her adult life.

Dh and I agree on the weird spellings, it's just not something we'll do. I think it becomes difficult for some to try and pronounce based on the spelling. Heck for me it was difficult for my grandma, my name is Jennifer and I always went by Jennie but my grandma always spelled it Ginny because that's how it was spelled when she was growing up. I'm not saying no one should use unique and different spellings but it just isn't for us.

I agree. I am not at all for different spelling of a name. Why do something that only lends itself to confusion??

I was so happy when I got married because I went from an easy to misspell maiden name to a very common married name that everyone knows how to spell. Life is so much easir now!

I am in total agreement about the spellings....everyone calls me Sandi but since I spell it with an i and not a y people NEVER spell it correctly (including my inlaws) I am used to it but it still bothers me....I told DH I would name our kids a "common" spelling name....if that makes any sense...we have to many friends with kids names that we can never remember how to spell....

I'm with you on the spellings - My name is not unusual, but when I was a kid I could find nothing with my name on it. You know how kids have pencils and ornaments and stickers and such with their names on them? I could never find one that said "Ann Marie". There was "Ann" and there was "Marie", but no "Ann Marie". I swore I would let my child have the joy, lol, of having things with their name on it and if you go with an unusual spelling you will not find anything!

Yes, I get called Patricia all the time. I always wonder where they get the "pa" from...not anywhere to be found in my name or pronounciation.

I was so glad the movie Forrest Gump came out "while" I was pregnant with ds, as I had planned on naming him Forrest after my grandfather. I quickly found another name.
I have a friend named Cheri, but pronounced Sherry. Her last name is Bellow, pronounced below....Cheri Bellow. hahah
