Poor DH

Ok guys so here is a little funny/sad story......

I went in on Monday for my karyotype blood work. I went to the hospital that my OB works out of because I trust them so much more then any hospital or lab in my town (it's sad but true). Because this isn't a test they do often they had to call a reference lab to see what vials to use, how many, the whole nine yards. For me it was three light green topped tubes and they had to be filled completely. DH went in this morning on his way home from work, same lab, same hospital. Well again they had to call because it was a different guy on duty then when I went in (big difference between 5 p.m. and 1:30 a.m.) and he got a different order. They took NINE vials out of my husband this morning, 9! They were only able to get 5 vials out of one arm and then had to move to the other side. So he comes home from work this morning with both elbows banded and looking at me like I'm in trouble. Granted we had decided this weekend that we weren't going to do the test only for me to have a break down on Monday and wanting the test to maybe have closure. To add insult to injury the hospital has called and left 3 messages on our answering machine tonight. I called back about 15 minutes ago (I was at bible study so I wasn't here to take the calls) and they reached my husband at work. I asked what the problem was and it turns out they used the wrong green top tubes with my husband so he has to go back in the morning when he gets off work and give them three more vials of blood!

Now for me this is funny because I gave myself all my injections and had blood work done every other day for the last month. He'd joke with my nurse that he had much better veins so he'd do it for me if he could but was glad that he didn't have to. Well now he's giving all the blood and more! Gotta love it.

OUCH! Your poor DH. But you are so right.... perhaps this whole incident has given him a taste of what you painfully had to endure as those injections and the b/w were getting done to you! Ugh. I hate needles.

Although I feel sorry for him, it does give him a dose of what you have been going through. What is this karyotype b/w?

He's a trooper. He's got great veins and they never have a problem getting blood from him. He went in this morning on his way home from work so he's done. He was laughing about it too and said it was only fair that he match my amount of blood drawn during this process.

The karyotype test is to check our chromosomes. It seems based on how our embryos fertilized and the fact that they grew so slow and arrested early that one of us or both of us may have some chromosomal abnormalities. It will also check to see if we are carries for things like CF and MS, etc.

So, assuming since your DH gave so much blood, it was for the karyotype test. Did they do any testing on the actual embryos that "arrested"?

Unfortunately they didn't do any testing on the embryos. I would have liked them to but I'm assuming they just tossed them. But yes we've both now had our blood work done for the karyotype and they are sending it to a local university bio-tech lab for processing. Should know more in a couple of weeks.

I feel badly for him that they made that error, but he might now appreciate what you went through. I am curious to hear the results once you get them back.

Poor guy! If I didn't have a bruised belly from injections, a bruised hand from a missed vein for anes. during ET, a bruised arm from blood draw and the sorest rump you can imagine, I might feel more sorry if my dh had to endure that too!! LOL As I told my dh following the ET, we just have to keep the humor in the situation and laugh with it, because as I'm sure you all have experienced the tears as well!!!!! What a wild ride it is!

I actually had a very smooth IVF cycle. No bruising from my injections. I did have bruising in my right arm because they did three estradiol draws from the same vein within 5 days of each other. This was also the same vein they used for my IV and I just had my karyotype done out of that vein as well. I had no problem with my PIO injections, Lupron injections or Menopur. But we too keep the humor in the situation, laugh as much as we can and love each other!

Glad to hear you didn't have too much discomfort and bruising. I actually am better off than it sounded. I too have had a pretty easy go of this. After 2 stims, I really only had a little bruising at the end of the 2nd. I was expecting worse, so am pleased that it has as easy as it has. Though those PIO's are buggers.......the worst part yet! Well..............the bed rest still stinks! 2 days down, 2 to go!!!!!! Yippee! We're going to get through all of this!!!!

Jen, I'm glad to hear that you two are checking "things out." I think that will pay off in the long run as you two decide what you will do next and when.

Let us know!
