Epilepsy in dogs

Do any of you have dogs that have epileptic seizures? My 2 1/2 year old Golden has epilepsy and her seizures have gotten extremely worse since October. It doesn't sound like a lot but last year she had 8 total, and those are just the ones that I was home/awake for. They used to be just shaking and she was able to look at me, now she seems pretty unaware and dazed when they happen. She lost control of her bowels one time.

I have talked to a vet about it, and they just suggested medication (which may or may not work. . . ), so I'm wondering what anyone else does? She just got through one this morning, so I thought I'd ask you all. I feel horrible because it happened at 6:45am, when I should have been sleeping. I don't even want to know how many she's had to have alone

My moms dog had epilepsy and the only thing that would help him was meds. He had to take them daily but never had anymore episodes. We thought our 2yr old lab mix had it too, vet questioned it but never diagnosed him with it. He was having the shaking and dazed gazes; when I noticed he was doing it, I would sit with him and stroke him, mostly on his head until they stopped. He hasn't had any in awhile though but has developed some type of separation anxiety where he doesn't want to leave my side, maybe security for him. If they're getting more frequent, I would consider some type of med either daily or prn; talk to the vet. I wish you the best with your furbaby!!

My dog has them as well. As a matter of fact we just took him to the vet the other day about them, but our vet doesn't seem to think they occur often enough right now for any medicine. Our dog has been having them off and on ever since he was around a year old...he's gonna be 5 in May. They usually happen when he is scared, or when something scares him, but sometimes he will be awakened by one. I am like you, I wonder how many he has when we aren't home. I feel so bad when I think of that. Not too long ago he had 4 in about 3 weeks, 2 occuring back to back one night, which has never happened before...this is why we brought him to the vet. Our dog was also diagonosed with cancer last year, so we weren't sure if it had anything to do it that, which I don't think it does. I really think medicine is the way to go if your dog is having them on a regular basis. My parents had a dog that would have them all the time and medicine was the only thing that stopped them. He lived a very long life thanks to the medicine he was on. Well, sorry for the long post, but I wanted you to know that I understand what you are going through and I pray your dog does great on the medicine.

Thank you for posting. I am so happy to hear medication stopped the seizures. I think Monday I'll have to call the vet to get her on meds. She's very skittish, and I wonder if that's because of the seizures, kindof like the separation anxiety? I'll do anything to help her, so on with the meds!
