musty smell

I don't know how to say this, but my towels have like a musty? or mildew smell to them, I am afraid to wash them in bleach because of them losing their color.
My whites I use bleach but on the color ones i don't know. Any suggestions?
I try to use the towel once then hang to dry and then wash, Do you think maybe the wash machine does this?

Hey Jane I am right there with ya. DH and I had that problem too. We tried different products and all that did was make them musky with a scent of flowers. Yeah, it was not pleasant. What we actually did was throw all those towels away and bought new ones. It is wonderful to get out of the shower and not have to worry about if the towel is a good one or a bad one. Best of luck - Hope that helps. Plus another reason to go shopping.

If you dont want to part with the towels, try adding some vinegar to the wash water, that should neutralize the smell

I kind of had that problem when I lived in my other house. Our linen closet had wooden shelves. When we first moved in (it was a newly built home) I noticed my towels smelled funky. My mom suggested that I put down some drawer liners on the wood so it wouldn't smell like musty wood. That really helped. I don't have the problem now, we have moved since then and I have wire rack shelves.
I would try the vinager or bleach your washer out before using it again.

Good luck!

Screamer are you washing your towels in hot water?
Also, are you noticing this smell fresh out the dryer or once they have been in the closet for a day or two?

OMG...that's sooo weird...I'm having the same problem. But I noticed it's with the towels that I've had for a long time. We've recenlty bought some new towels, and they smell great when washed. But the others never loose that musty smell. So Weird. I think I'm gonna throw them out. I hate using them, cuz then I feel like I smell like that after. Yuck! I wonder if it's the water or maybe just getting old. My clothes and other linens never smell like that. Strange.
