OMG! Can anybody help - RE: dog urinated on sofa!!

Hi all!

I just ran out to do some errands, gone an hour and when I came home, I found our Great Dane had urinated on one of our great room sofas!! OMG!!! She has a urinary tract infection, I understand, but she has NEVER ever urinated anywhere but on her crate bed, never ever in the seven years we've had her. And, I mean when she's got an infection, she's never urinated anywhere but in her crate when she's got one and I just toss that bedding into the washer, not a problem.

This is a $1,000 sofa, and I know we've had it almost nine years too, but still, it was like brand new as we only have family down once or twice a year and we just never, ever sit on this furniture! I don't have a carpet cleaner, but don't even know if that would work. She urinated on the main coushions you sit on and it is soaked completely through (I guess they have formed, foam inserts?) and it went through that into the part of fabric that is stretched over the frame. Also, the back of the sofa got hit pretty hard . The sofa has two bottom cushions you sit on, she soaked both of those, and undernearth those where they sit on the sofa and the backside. I'm just totally beside myself, have no clue what to do. We have two of these sofas, matching, sitting facing each other in our great room. I feel this one is just a total loss but haven't a clue IF there is a way to clean or fix it. Can anybody shed some light???? I'm just heartbroke, we loved these sofas!!

Thanks for any insight or help!

hi Dona,

Poor Pup...your great dane probably is pretty bad at this point. Do you have antibiotics for her? I would make sure you try and confine her to rooms with the least amount of furniture and carpet until it's all gone. I am sure you love her so much and just want her to get better. Being such a large dog - how can you prevent big damage when they have mistakes.

Have you tried unzipping the cushions? or they do not unzip? I usually wash mine in the washer twice per month. and if there was an accident which happens with my pups - I clean the cushion cover with resolve Pet and stain remover - works pretty well.

Now if your furniture is that which doesn't zip off, you can have your couch dry cleaned or steam cleaned. You can rent the units usually at a nearby store - or hire someone to come in.

If it doesn't happen that often, then maybe just have it cleaned professionally this time. I hope you get it worked out and your pup gets better quickly. good luck!

You probably have to get one of those steam cleaners. Then go to your local pet store- they have products that are made to remove pet urine odor. Fortunately we haven't had that problem, but we bought a cheapy little steam cleaner at Target (for small pet areas) and use tons of resolve. We have a kitty barfer (Jake) and an iguana who likes to poop behind the stereo when she is pissed off. She has even pooped on the couch. Amazingly enough resolve took that out too (and iguana poo is not exactly solid).

I hope your doggie feels better soon. I like great danes...

From experience I know that the best stuff for long-term pet odor removal is called zero odor. ZeroOdorStore.com

If you use whatever product to do the immediate clean up. I would follow it up with this stuff. It's the only stuff that REALLY gets the odor out. They have different bottles for dogs and cats, so make sure you get the right one.
Good Luck!

My dog had the same problem last spring, but the accidents were only on the carpet. I took her to the vet, at first they said it was just a UTI- but after a few weeks when the medicine did not help- I took her to another vet- it turned out that she had bladder stones and had to get an operation. She is fine now, but it on a very strict special diet. I hope your dog feels better soon!

Hopefully your dog will feel better soon....we use Resolve pet stain remover (we have a cat that likes to overeat and then barf on our carpet ALOT) I also have found that using baby wipes works really well for cleaning up almost anything....I discovered this once when babysitting our little niece who threw off her poopy diaper and I cleaned their rug with a baby wipe and was SHOCKED! Also, if the stain doesn't come out then you could always flip your cushions.....I do know that we have a guy come in every six months to steam clean our carpets and he can get out any stain so a professional may be your best bet. At least it doesn't happen very often!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

Uggh! So sorry that happend...it's happened to me too. My youngest dog sometimes has a bladder problem (can't hold it for a lengthly time) one day we came home to a huge wet spot on my coach. I couldn't believe it, she's never done that before!! Thankfully we could unzip the covers from the actual cushion. I through the cover right into the wash, but the cushion was way to large for the washer, so my dh took the cushion out side and washed it with soap and water. It took a while for it to dry, a few days, but everything came out great, no pee smell at all. Are you able to take the covers off the cushion? If not, try renting a steam cleaner. That should definitley get the stains out and make sure you use a pet odor shampoo, that will definitely help with the smell.

Good luck!

Hey girls!!

Thank you so much for all the great, helpful replies, I truly apprecaite them!

I see that in my haste to post, I made a mistake and said I didn't have a steam cleaner, but we do have a carpet cleaner, so I typo'ed there!

OK to start.....I was able to zip the covers off...but since I don't know how long after I left that she peed on the sofa, it was hard to tell how saturated the coushions were inside the covers. The covers I washed three times and they smell wonderful! The very thick padded coushions inside the cover, they are another story. I got real close to smell and I can certainly smell urine in them, even just walking near them I smell it. I left them outside for three whole days, hoping they might air out and the smell go away, but no such luck. So, I went and bought PetZyme at Petsmart and saturated them and let it dry. The smell is considerably less and now when I just walk by or near the cushions I don't smell it, but if I lean down into them I still do. So, now I suppose I'll take them outside to the driveway and saturate them with hose water and soap and let them air dry, then maybe do the PetZyme stuff again and see how it goes.

I do have a steam cleaner, but for some reason, the wand part stopped sucking up the solution, so I can't use that. It still works wonders for our carpet, but the stair and sofa cleaning wand is pretty useless without suction.

As for my sweet girl Dane...well, she's actually gotten these since she was a puppy, but usually just about once a year, usually about October, so she's early. She gets Clavamox and it clears up just fine. Sadly, when she has these infections, there is blood in her urine as well as struvite crystals. Our vet told us that if she gets them more than 2-3 times a year, we need to look at surgery...but so far it's only been once a year, and around the same time...so, we get her on meds quickly and they go right away!!

Thank you all so much, I truly appreciate your support and help and good thoughts for my baby girl! She's just never, ever peed anywhere but in her crate when she has one of these infections, so it was a real shock to find it on the sofa! And, the urine associated with these is pretty awful powerful smelling, so it was real hard to get this mess cleaned up!

June - Thanks for the heads up on that product. I did an Internet search and found so many different answers to my question on which cleaner, but did find a lot who swore by PetZyme, so that was near and I ran to get it. I did indeed take the odor out of the part of the couch that is not removable or washer friendly, so that was nice. But, I plan to follow up with the ZeroOdor product!

Hugs!
