What IS "spinning" class?

I just joined a gym and they mentioned classes they hold...I know spinning has to do with the bikes, but do you have to spin so fast for so long and how is it a "class"? Is there a teacher and if so, what for?

Can somebody fill me in? I want good cardio workouts for fat loss, so I'm hoping this might be one.

Thanks,
Dona

It's exactly what you think it is...you're on a bike and an instructor tells you to speed up/slow down/do intervals on a stationary bike. Music is going in the background. It's a lot of fun and a great workout

went to one with a friend. i had not worked out in awhile. My butt hurt for two days afterwords. The seats on the bikes hurt. I was a good workout. You might want to get some biking shorts with padding.

Dona, I took a spinning class a few years ago and loved it. Yes you are on a stationary bike and there is an instructor there for you. You go through a series of different paces, different levels and we also did some work with hand weights while pedaling. It was a great class.

Spinning classes are a great workout. I prefer the ones that have you standing on the bike the whole time -- terrific exercise and not as difficult or intimidating as it sounds. I'm not allowed to do any cardio right now (2 ww), and I'm so envious you get to take those wonderful classes!

If you decide to take spinning classes, shop around and find a teacher you like. A big part of the enjoyment is the kind of music your teacher selects. If you love the music, you'll enjoy the class.

Interestingly, in the last class I attended, there was a woman who looked to be about 8 months pregnant on one of the bikes!

Well, the gym I joined holds classes and there is one later this week and I want to try it. But for right now, I've had my A$$ on a treadmill and ski machine every single night, for two hours...I've never in my life worked out that hard....but now, the 2nd toe on each foot (the toenail) is deep purple and very painful and I have massive blisters on both pinky toes. I can't figure it out...I know nothing about correct shoes for power walking and/or running but I'm wearing $100 nike shox, thinking they were great for that...any input??? I need to do something about this as I can't keep treadmilling if my feet are killing me 10 minutes in!

Dona, I absolutely love spinning, the music the instructor selects is the key in having fun and of course the different paces/levels he/she walks you through.
Also, I remember years back when I took spinning, there was a very pregnant lady and she kicked ***. Even though, the paces are different, she would set her own pace at times. What made my class even more fun is that everyone would cheer on everyone to get the person going, such a good team!
Oh! one of the members here mentioned that the seats hurt, I agree they hurt, but I bought a gel seat cover and it worked wonders.

I have the itch now to get back to those classes
