OPK's how do they work?

Do they usually follow a pattern...like (light...getting darker as ovulation comes near...then it's darkest when you get your surge...then slowely back down to a light color?)

Or does the lightness/darkness fluctuate all through out your cycle and only turn darkest at the surge?

I'm curious because in the last couple weeks I've had EWCM a couple times off and on... But in this last week, I've had it for several days in a row? I was curious what was going on with me so yesterday I did a HPT and it was and a OPK and it was pretty light.

I did another OPK today and it's much darker but not as dark as the control line.

Does this mean I might be getting ready to ovulate, since the line is getting darker...should it continue to get darker? Or does it fluctuate from day to day without really meaning anything?

I think everyone is different. In fact, for me, every month is different. Sometimes I get a gradual dark line. Sometimes it just shows up one day really dark. And sometimes it flucuates. Just make sure your 2nd line is as dark as or darker than the control line. Sounds like with the cm and line getting darker, you make be coming up on your surge. Those buggers are so hard to read.

AMEN to that. Those things are hard to read but i usually count it as a positive if it is really close. they do flucuate. Sometimes i get a dark then light then dark. It depends on alot of things. Afternoon is the best time to do them and you are not suppose to pee for 4 hours. My best readings are 4 hours after fmu. hope this helps

I think it's different for everyone.

Mine get darker and lighter throughout the cycle, but they will gradually get darker as I approach the surge. On the day of the surge they are dramatically darker, though. The day after the surge they are usually much lighter, though the line is still visible.

Once you get that surge how long do you continue to get postives on the OPK's?

I got two positive last night...one where the line was definatley darker, I tested again a half hour later (but I also drank a bottle of water between that time and it was the same as the test line.

When I tested this morning it looked exactly the same as the control line. I tested again about 2 hours later again after drinking some water and it was much much lighter. I'm going to test again tonight just to see what it does...but I'm trying not to drink anything and trying to hold out as long as I can.

Also...does it matter if you read the test after 8 minutes? The box said to read between 5-8 minutes. But I know with HPT's it doesn't matter.

I had to 2 RE's tell me the OPK's are unpredictable. The nurse always told me to call once the line was as dark or darker than the control line, but I think once you get a line, it's the indication you are going to O, so ASAP. Everyone is different when the O, some could be 10 hrs after the OPK and some could be 20. It's all a crapshoot.

Good luck!!!

Sounds like you've got your bases covered Melanie. I can never figure out how many dpos I am based on opks. You should ovualate within the next 24-36 hours after you detect the surge. Good luck this month!!!

We did the baby dance...friday,saturday and sunday so I think we're covered as well. Myabe will give it a try again tonight just in case I ovulate later.

But I think I've already ovulated. I felt a lot of soreness in my right ovary area last night, it's lightened up some but it's still there.

I thought you only get that soreness from OHSS symptoms and over stimulating. since this is a natural cycle I shouldn't have more than one egg? Though I may have some cysts too.

Infact I'm going a little crazy here...I read on the OPK box that you can get false positives from cysts...not sure how.....but that's what it said. So I'm a little concerned that maybe I didn't ovulate on my own and maybe it's just picking up cysts?

Oh well...I'll hope for the best...especially since i've been having a lot of EWCM lately as well. Something good has got to be going on in there. I don't normally get these symptoms on my own...and I've never gotten a positive OPK before...so I can't wait for this 2 ww to end with a .

wanna, hey good I love being buddies during the 2ww~!!! YEA!
I wouldn't read too much into the false positive etc... and just try to focus on bd and being upbeat about BFP. I'm trying not to worry over every little thing I feel. Like for instance... I have a blocked tube on my left side. I think I felt o pains from that side so therefore this cycle's going tobe a bust but I'm trying to look at the fact that at least I o'd and had a + opk.

I can't wait to poas. I have a feeling I'm going to become an addict. That's terrible to say! but once you get one + on a test regardless of the test, you're done!!
