I've had it!

I've had it! I took Connor for his 1 year check up yesterday ( I had to reschedule it twice... not the doctors fault but irritating that reception couldn't get it right ). When we got there we waited in the room for the doctor for and hour and a half and by the time he got in there Connor had had it and was fir to be tied. Well, any way from what I could get out of the doctor I guess Connor is doing good. He is off the growth chart weighing in at 24 lbs and 33 in long. I tried to tell the ped. that Connor was sick has had diarrhea for a couple of days and started coughing, sneezing and snotting that morning and had thrown up earlier. Not to mention cranky. Well, that just went right over his head. He started checking his ears which set Connor off and then stuck the tongue depressor in his mouth and that was it, Connor threw up every where. My poor baby started screaming and wouldn't stop. I proceeded to clean up the mess and the doctor just kinda stood there. He said well I guess he dosen't feel good. I'm like NO ****!!! Well he said no shots today... I wasn't ready for him to get them any way. The rest I could get out of him was something about the manuf. of the mmr vaccine has not been able to keep up with the demand and said something about wanting to give Connor an experimental vaccine that they are trying to get approved by the FDA... OVER MY DEAD BODY!!!!! He also said that Connor would get his mmr, chicken pox and hepititis shots when he comes back when he feel better. Is that normal to get so many. I was just expecting the mmr. The doctor just kept trying to get away and I practicaly had to chase him down to see what to do about Connor being sick and throwing up. I think he is a good doctor but he just kinda rubs me the wrong way. He just seems to blow off all my concerns. Yesterday was just it. I think I might look for another ped. that better suits Connor and I. Sorry if this thread dosen't make much sence. My nerves are still on edge and I didn't get much sleep last night. Connor was restless all night... he just felt sooo bad.
I still need to talk to someone about Connor not wanting anyone to hold his hands and he doesn't say many words and the ones he does say he dosen't say them often. Connor's ped had also mentioned that I can give him whole milk and I asked about changing him gradualy mixing it with his formula for a while and he didn't say a thing he just looked a me like i was a stupid crazy mom and just kept righting on his not pad. So I just don't know what to do. I am so frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have a big boy here! 33" tall, that is great!
Sorry for your experience, sometimes it doesn't click with the Dr, so better find another one.
About him not wanting to hold his hands, I have the same problem with my boy when I am trying to get him to walk beside me, he wants it his own way.
About not having much of a vocabulary, forget it, same here. I am not yet concerned about it. My nephew is 5 mo older and still is not saying anything but mama.
I hope Connor gets better soon, probably a bug he got.
Hugs from us!

I don't blame you one bit - I am annoyed and frustrated just reading your post! I'm sorry you had to go through that - it's bad enough when our own doctors treat us like that, but don't mess with our kids.

As far as the milk goes, here's what I have heard and what I am doing with LP - start by doing 75% formula and 25% milk, then advance to 50-50, then 75% milk, 25% formula, and finally all formula. How fast or slow you do it is up to you. My allergist said to do each for one day, but I have heard others doing it over the course of a week. LP did fine until we go to 75% milk - then he refused. So I went back to 50/50 for a couple days and today he took the 75% milk 25% formula without a problem.

Connor is a BIG boy!! His 12 month stats are almost the same as LP's 15 month stats, lol! Take heart in knowing that you are doing a fantastic job growing such a big, healthy boy!

As fasr as the stomach bug - I feel for you. Try giving him a bland diet for a few days. When LP was throwing up back in February, the peds said to skip the formula for a few days and let his digestive system rest. They suggested pedilyte or even just juice and water if that was all he would take (LP hates pedialyte, all flavors). Just make sure he has enough wet diapers a day.

I hope Connor threw up on the doctor.

And as far as the shots go - hell no to the "experimental" one!! He has got to be kidding me! And I think the recommended schedule is for the MMR and Chicken Pox to be given together, but I don't think the Hep B is routinely given with those.

I would start looking for a new peds - this sounds like a pattern with this guy and you don't want to be dealing with that every time you are there. We were at the peds for almost 2 hours for LP 15 month checkup, but we love our peds and he spends time with everyone, you never feel rushed, so it's a give and take.

Good luck - I wish we could be of more help. But you are not wrong in your concerns - not at all!!!

I would be P.O'ed too if my baby's peds blew me off too. I recently had to switch docs in our practice because the peds we use to go to decided to go start here own practice. We have been seeing her since my oldest was born. I was so bummed when she left. She actually listened. Now we see a male doctor and he is OK, not great, just ok. I told him up front that I am VERY paticular about my kids, I ask a lot of questions and I will probably get on his nerves but I didn't care because that I am the paying customer. He looked at me like I was a NUT!! I truly didn't care. I wanted to make sure he knew what I expected out of him as a doctor for my kids.
If you do not feel comfortable with your doctor, I would switch. I know with some insurances it is not always easy but if you can, I would. That is wrong of them to keep you and your baby waiting for an hour and a half. That is SO irritating. And especially if your little man hasn't been feeling well. And as far as Connor throwing up on him, it serves the dr right!!! Way to go Connor!! hehe!
Hope he is feeling better. Poor little guy! Hang in there Moni, it is just one of those things that we deal with as being a mom, isn't it?

Oh, and the milk thing. My peds told me that it was up to me if I wanted to do that. We did it for a week or so. He didn't have a reaction to it but he didn't care for the temperature change. He was use to the nice warm formula rather than the cold milk.

And I must say, you have a nice size little boy! I think Alex now weighs 24 and he is almost 15 months.

You are doing a great job Moni...Conner is a big guy!! You have every right to be mad at that Dr....he was just being inconsiderate! And, like AM said...I hope Conner puked on the Dr.

I would also say no way to the experimental MMR/varicella vaccine. I have read a bit about it, but my kid will not be the guinea pig, sorry!

Keep up the good work!!!

Thanks everyone. I have decided to hold off on switching to whole milk until my little man gets to feeling better. I also lost it a little while ago and called DH crying. You know I just can't handle this. I shouldn't feel bad after leaving my babies ped. office. He should make me feel reasured and if I have any more questions to feel like I can ask anything but I just dont' feel like I'm getting across to him at all. Any way I'm going to call a new ped. that a coworker of my DH recomended (don't have any "Friends" with babies around here ). I'm a little aprehensive though. Her old doctor just retired and she said he was great and this is a new docotor that she has only seen once but he treated both of them real well. I hope I can find him a better doctor. He deserves better.

I agree with Tricia at 100%. Some Doctors forget that they are there becaue we hired them not the other way around. I think once they know who is boss they tend to snap back into reality but if they dont then its on to a new doctor.

Moni, I hope Connor feels better ASAP!!

As for the milk I plan to follow the same as AMKD did. I feel a slow and smooth transition is best for their little bellies. No need to rush into whole milk so fast.

Hugs!!

i'm pretty new to the mommy thing - but i have to say i'd be ticked off if i had to wait an hour and a half, and if i felt at ALL like the ped was blowing me off or invalidating my concerns. i think i'd probably shop for another doctor. sorry about the frustrating experience!

What a day! Oh my goodness. You deserve your own meltdown over there. And poor little man. Who would want a tongue depresser being stuck down your mouth when you're already not feeling good? I hope there was puke on the Ped. too!

I just read last night on the Dr. Sears web site that some of the separate MMR vaccines are behind on production versus demand. He has yet another alternate schedule if you are interested in still doing them separate. He also has an area of the web site listing doctors that visitors recommend. I'm going to be calling all the ones in our state to see if I can find the vaccines separate. Here is a link:
AskDrSears - The Vaccine Book

I hope your week gets better over there!

moni- definately find a new dr! i'm sorry you had such a bad experience! We introduced whole milk all by itself in a cup and went to 1 cup a day and the rest breast milk and gradually switched over to all cups of whole milk but that was because i was afraid that if i mixed it she wouldn't take the breast milk and i didn't want to waste the breast milk!

peach- thanks for that info.

Thanks for the link to the book definatly worth checking out. Going to make a trip to books a million.
