should i be worried?

simon hasn't had a poopy diaper in almost 48 hours! this is very unusual for him. he doesn't seem to be in pain, but he has got to be constipated. is this something that warrants a call to the pediatrician?

Hannah: as shocking as this may sound, I swear it is true; if you call the Dr. I bet you a hundred they will say it is not uncommon for a baby to go as long as 7-10 days w/o a poop~UGGG. Sad but true, have you tried a little prune juice or Karo Syrup to get things going. C had some poop issues, don't tell LP she'd just die, but one these two always seemed to fix her just right!

When Alex was about 2 months old he got a little backed up. My cousin suggested giving him a little Karo in his bottle (with breastmilk since I was still nursing). In about 5 hours or so, it worked like a charm! Poor baby, I hope that he gets some sort of relief soon!

We used apple juice diluted in water (she took about 3 oz) when she got constipated with bananas. She went back to normal the next day.

Hannah- My Ped. says NO to Karo because of bochulism. I give my boys apple-prune juice. If he gets to where he's in pain use a thermometer. Just stick the thermometer in his rectum about an inch or so and move it around GENTLY. It will relax his muscles and make him go. It works like the suppositories do. Tried and true for me. My Conner has had poop problems since day 1 so I always have this worry.......

Hannah,
Michelle and Josh have had some periods of constipation and these are some things that help:

-You can stimulate them with a thermometer, make sure you put some aquapore or something like that so it won't hurt them and use only the tip. (that works with Josh EVERY time)

-You can give him prune or apple juice with water, careful because the prune juice is VERY powerful... A little goes a long way.

-You can also give them half glycerin infant supposirtory, it won't harm them at all and it works like magic.

I hope this helps...

Kris, Ethan had a bought of constipation around the same time. He had poop there but couldn't get it out. Seemed to bother us a whole lot more then it bothered him. I was told to try water first, just an ounce, for a couple days. That didn't work so we went to half an ounce of juice with half an ounce of water, that didn't work. Then we tried the half glycerin suppository and surprisingly enough that didn't work. We ended up in the emergency room where the doctor asked "have you thought about changing his formula?" - UGH! I know you are breastfeeding so that's not an option. I'd say try water or water and juice tomorrow if he still doesn't go. Yes, it's not uncommon for them to go without a bowel movement for a little while but we don't like to hear that when we know what's normal for our little ones.

I've always heard either pear or white grape juice. Gerber makes both of them in a 4 pack with each juice in 2 oz bottles. Mix the 2 oz of juice with 2 oz of water. I've only had to do it twice. First time Aiden literally sipped maybe an ounce of the mixture and was pooping with the bottle in his mouth. Second time I had left him with dh for a few hours and dh had given him 1.5 whole bananas and a jar of mashed bananas since Aiden seemed so excited about bananas It took about 2 oz. of the juice concoction that time, a little mylanta to calm his tummy, and an hour later poor Aiden was pooping pellets and I made dh look at it to see what had happened

I swear half the time just taking the juice out of the cupboard seems to be enough to jinx Aiden with his next feeding and he poops!

Not having a baby yet myself, I've only heard the advice about pear juice. My friend swears by it. Let us know what ends up working best for Simon.

Of course, my preggo mind quickly goes to the obvious joke about little Simon's constipation: Maybe he's pregnant? (OK, I know this was something you were worried about, so I shouldn't kid, but there are days when I think I'll have this baby before anything else comes out of me.)

Good luck and hopefully something will come out of your cutie's booty in no time!

We had poop issues as well - but in our case LP was visibly struggling to get it out and when he finally did, they were little pebbles. We have done most of the things listed here - Karo in water, prune juice, pear juice, and white grape juice. The Karo syrup and prune juice worked the best. We started this at 4 months old - before that I tried some more "natural" remedies like bicycling his legs and massaging his belly (there is an 'i love you' method that is supposed to promote peristalsis - worked for us). I would check with your peds just to find out what doses of everything he recommends since Simon is still so young.

Poor guy - LP feels for him!

hey girls, thank you SO much for all the tips! i'm glad to hear this isn't too unusual. i did some additional reading online and it sounds like babies can change their bowel habits after the 2nd month.

i took your advice and got some gerbers prune/apple juice and mixed about 2 oz with a bottle of breastmilk last night ... but still nothing! he has a lot of gas but so far nothing productive. i might try a bit more juice this morning, but i'm not worried thanks to all your replies.
