Ok ladies, I just received the news this morning that my sister-in-law who is currently pregnant with her second child, a son, due in December - was just told yesterday that her son's umbilical cord only has two blood vessels instead of the normal three. So me, being the researcher that I am, looked into it and this is the term they use - single umbilical artery. Now the articles I read have only scared me on this issue, I was wondering if any of you have dealt with this or know of anyone who has and what were the results? My DH says I'm of a different breed since I'd prefer to have all the information I can get - good, bad and/or ugly - then to be left in the dark. But with my SIL our fear is in telling her and causing further issues when we feel she needs to go through the additional testing before worrying. Here are two websites I've found thus far but I honestly just can't look anymore.

The only thing I know about it is my dh's cousin has a healthy 4 yr. old who had this when she was pregnant with her. I know they did level 2 US's on her. She also just had another baby this past Nov. who did not have this, she had the normal 3 vesel cord. Sorry I don't have anymore info for you.

Kelly, I appreciate any information. This is a situation that tears me a part for multiple reasons. She just turned 25. Was told when we were in high school that she'd never have children and has a healthy and beautiful four year old daughter. She was scheduled to have a hysterectomy in April and the Friday before went in for her blood work pre-op stuff and find out she was pregnant. She's got a very serious case of HPV. So this is a miracle pregnancy, I just pray he's ok. I think she needs to go in for a better ultrasound and maybe even go for the amnio that is mentioned but I can't bring this up to her. She's a very emotional person and I can't bring myself to be the bearer or bad news if it might not be bad news. Does that make sense? Hopefully she gets in touch with her doctor and they take over. I have the information if they want it but I'd prefer to wait until after her daughter's birthday party tomorrow to do so.
