Separation Anxiety

So, even though Dylan never slept thru the night until ONE YEAR OLD! I was so excited!!! He always took his bottle and went right back to sleep. Well, for the last week he will not, so I have been sleeping on the floor with him. Its horrible! The dr says it is separation anxiety and we have to let him cry it out and it should take a week. OMG. What can I do. He wakes up my dh who must get his sleep! I find it easier to be on the floor! Anyone else going thru this? I guess this is the age it happens. And, they start dreaming at this age! Oh, and he got his first molar (early by a couple months) and 3 more molars coming in. So, yes cranky baby! Unlike him!

Hi Sharon!!

I find that when Gabe is teething is when he refuses to go back to sleep in his crib. He is just like Dylan. He is 9 months old now and still does not sleep throught the night. Gets up usually twice and each time takes a bottle and goes right back to sleep but when he was teething he would refuse to go back to sleep unless it was with me. Once the teeth came in he had no issues with sleeping in his crib.

I understand what you're going through. I'm hoping I don't have to do the same thing if the girls get any fussier. I know my mom slept on the floor with me, so my dad could get sleep. Sorry, I don't have any advice for ya.

Sharon, my older ds did the same thing. He was always a good sleeper though. Then, around 14 months, something happened. He also began getting his molars in & got his only ear infection and probably was having separation anxiety also. We tried to let him cry it out & that never worked for him. He would cry for HOURS and get him self so upset. So, we caved & let him sleep with us. I know how frustrating this phase can be....I really feel for you. Poor Dylan

Ok, Caitlin has been dreaming since she was born??? Or seems to anyway.

Caitlin has been getting really clingy lately. She goes to daycare 4-5 days a week, has an after hours babysitter (about 10-15 hrs a week) and spends time at my moms occasionally without me. So, I am confused as to why she freaks out sometimes when I leave. She doesn't do it every time but when she does it is horrible! Today she was a little fussy but not bad, yesterday she didn't care but friday she screamed her head off! I could hear her all the way at the front of the building!

I think they just have to know they need that close contact to feel safe sometimes, even though they are in a safe place already. It takes time, my middle nephew was very attached to his mom (she stayed home with him and breastfed for just over a year so they were very attached). He is now 2 1/2 and has been doing really well for the last 3-4 months. He will go play by himself now, which is a BIG thing for him! We have to go look for him because he will play 2-3 hours by himself while his big brother is on the computer and in and out of the play room. Good Luck, I know it is very hard to just let them cry. We can't do cio. She cries so hard she start coughing then throws up. I am not about to have to change her sheets and her outfit 2-3 times a night!!!

LONG...I am on a 2ww remember.....LOL

Hi sharon,

I can tell you, your not alone. Here's my story.

For the first 1 1/2 of my sons life we would go to his room with his baba and I would sit on the floor. ( I never did break down and buy a rocker or glider...I always wanted one but just never got one)

Anyway I would sit there on the floor with him in my lap and he would drink his half n half ( half milk/ half water, I didnt want the milk to ruin his teeth) and read him his book " I love you, Forever" ( it was the cutiest thing everytime she would say in the book she rocked him back and forth, and back and forth. I would rock him in my arms the same way.)
EVERY NIGHT and by the time I was done reading it he was just about sleeping. I would put him to sleep in the dark and close the door not all the way. Good for the night..so easy...

But, I went away to flight attendant training in texas came back almost a month later. MY dear dh ruined it.
He would sleep on the floor in my sons room until he went to sleep. When I went to put him in the room he would point to the floor and say "DOWN" He actually would tell us to sleep on the floor. Sometimes I felt like the dog...LOL...

I look at it now and it was the best five minutes on the floor I ever spent.

PS...I trained him back to my way with the book. But when dada was home from the firehouse he continued to sleep on the floor. Since the baby was ok when I put him to sleep and he never gave dh a hard time either as long as he slept on the floor. I left them to bond...

But...now back to what you, It does work if you are consistent for a week. Increase a minute everytime to just reassure the baby. But after the second/third time your not supposed to say anything to the baby. It works I did it with my 3 dd's and everytime after your heartaches for a couple of days hearing them cry. In the long run, when its all over. Your done the baby is in for a good night sleep and you have the rest of the night to do whatever.

PSS..Except when there teething everything goes out the window. The crap hurts I dont blame them for crying. LOL....

Sharon - Thanks. I hope Dylans pain goes away I hate seeing babies in pain.
Your absolutely right life doesnt make sense, I use to think I had the perfect ( my sense of perfect, because nothing in life is perfect) life. An awesome dh, great kids, and very close family a beautiful home, sunday church & family dinners. I wanted nothing more in life. We had our health & happiness. I felt we were true blessed (especially after dh and I survived 911)

Then God throw me a really bad turn. My perfect life was no more perfect. I always knew I was blessed.

Life is short, I wish more people in life were like these people on the forum knowing that we should never take anything for granted. Appreciate what we have because it so easy for it just to dissappear.

For the rest of my life I will keep this forum in my prayers.

Barbara I had that book for my first. I Love the lil "poem" mom says to her boy....let me see if I remember..."I'll love forever I'll love you for always as long as I'm living my baby you'll be". Think I got it right.
Anyway Sharon I would wait until the teething has subsided before attempting anything. Fortuantely Tristan has been great with still sleeping while teething (although he is now starting to cry when people leave the house especially his dad).
I hope Dylan is feeling better soon!!

Hey Sharon...Brady has always been a great sleeper, right thru the night. But I do notice when he is about to cut a tooth, sleep is out the window! This is what we're going thru right now. The past two nights Brady has been getting up 1 or 2 times crying. I either give him a bottle or have to bring him in with us. I'm seeing the pattern with him, so I know it's the teeth. Like everyone said...I would wait til he cuts his teeth before trying anthing new. Hope that happens soon for you!!! I know once Brady did...everything was back to normal!!

Best of luck!

Barbara I was reading all the replys and came across yours and noticed your signature. I visited your sons visitation site and just wanted to say how sorry I am. He was such a beautiful little boy and seemed so happy and full of life. I also noticed he was born on my birthday, which touched my heart.

Life is very unfare sometimes and I will never understand why things like this happen. But I just wanted to wish you the best of luck on your beta and praying for a BFP for you and your family!!

Take care

I don't know if this will help but this is what worked for Makenna.
She used to have to play with my hair before she fell asleep so we got her a baby with real hair. To this day she can't sleep with out the baby and Mommy gets to sleep with out hers .

Is there any object that he is connected to that he could sleep with?

I too visited JoJo's site. The pictures of him are beautiful and hearing you speak of him brings tears to my eyes. I will think and pray for your family often. Good luck with the beta.

Sharon- I think that Alex and Dylan have been emailing or calling each other lately. We are going through the EXACT same thing. I am praying that tonight goes much better. Alex has been really tough to get to sleep lately. He needs to fall asleep in my arms and then I could lay him down. A few weeks ago we went on vacation and he sleep fairly well then. After we got home, I thought maybe he had to get back on schedule and use to the time zone difference. But it has been almost 3 weeks and every other night has been different. He could be out like a light and as soon as I lower him into his crib, he wakes right up and starts to whine. A few times I have had to let him cry and sometimes I have gotten lucky enough that he will only cry for about 3-4 minutes and he is out for the night. Other times I have had to go in there because he will not stop crying and he had gotten himself all worked up and pooped from crying so hard. Thank goodness he doesn't make himself throw up like my oldest had done a few times. So far tonight he went down but with a small fight. He had shots today and not much of a nap so I know that he was worn out from us running around all day today. So I will cross my fingers for the two of us on getting much needed sleep.
Good luck girl!!!
