Birth Control or Not?

I wasn't sure where to post this question. I just had my 6 week check up and my doc asked about my plans for birth control. Honestly I haven't thought about it because it took so long to get pregnant. My doc said that she has a few patients that have got pregnant on their own after having a baby and have went through IVF and other IF treatments. DH and I would like another baby but I couldn't imagine getting pregnant soon.

Have any of you got pregnant on your own after IVF?

I have heard of people getting pregnant right after having a baby--wether or not they had fertility treatments. We were very careful (dh left 2 months ago for army training) but I was not on birth control at the time. I will be getting the mirena though--mostly because of my complications I had at the end of my pregnancy and after.

Good Luck! I know, it seems wierd to take birth control after trying for so long, I felt like I was abandoning my dreams. Wierd, I know!

I thought it could never happen naturally...I was wrong! After my twins were born my doc asked me the same question which I thought was ridiculous. My DH and I were "done" after having our twins...guess not! Baby #3 is on his or her way in January so our kiddos will be just 17 months apart.

we got pregnant after we the delivery of the twins.
my first cycle came, we did a FET that failed and then thought well....we could use the last of my clomid and try on our own until we were upto doing another FET.
And we got prego....it can happen!

our MFM thinks it would be in our best interest to use BCP until we are ready to try again with either a FET or naturally.

Take the birth control until you're ready is all I can say; your body oten figures out what to do, I promise! A good friend had the same thing as Angie: twins are about 24 months now and baby brother is 6.

Funny you asked this question I was also thinking about this. We have both decided that we will use condoms only because thats what we are confortable with, I feel it seems ridiculous but after having a c-section and diabetes while pregnant with an x-large baby, I really don't want to put my body at risk. But with that being said we are not sure if we want anymore babies and we are planning on not using any type of birthcontrol after she turns 1, so if it does happen it would only be a suprise not a struggle until we know for sure if we want to add the third baby, sounds stupid doesn't it? Any how you always hear about people getting pregnant right on there own after struggling with fertility for the first born. But my qeustion is, do you really think it depend on which type of fertility problem it is, we have male factor fertility is it really possible. Did anyone get pregnant on their own after ivf and icsi for low sperm count and motility.

Our infertility was due to low sperm count, so yes it could happen!

thanks ladies for the response, I spoke with DH and he is OK with condoms and spermicide. It's funny because I keep having dreams that I get pregnant the first time we make love. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world but I would like give my body time to heal and also time to enjoy the little one we have.

We are sort of throwing caution to the wind on this one. We haven't ever used BC so we wont start now. If we get pg naturally, we'd both be happy, but if not, we have some embies on ice for the not so distant future.

This is a real difficult decision. I am so sensitive to hormone therapy that even birth control pills were to much. i really suffered through our infertility treatments, so I have a real distaste for any kind of hormone treatments.

I have had an IUD before and it makes my periods real heavy and cramping was worse.

I feel like just being natural and not taking anything or putting anything in my body for now. Hopefully I don't get pregnant anytime soon.

I have yet to have a menstrual flow since having the twins. I think DH and I will use condoms too since they are so easy.

Do you plan on breastfeeding? If so that will help you to not start your period, and make it LESS likely that you will ovulate, and less likely to have another baby?

It is such a personal decision, but we felt the same as Furbaby, we felt if it happen naturally we would be thrilled because the odds were so against us (both DH and I had issues), we had tried so long that BC was the last thing I wanted to put my body on.
We ended up doing our FET with our last two embies in July and are now prego, I know our babies will be close in age (ONLY 18 months difference), but we are thrilled to finally have the family we believe we were meant to have.
I was like you though, and untill the 7 month mark it's way to hard think of having another one! Congrats, and good luck on building your family no matter how long you do or don't wait!

After Brady was born, my Dr HIGHLY recommened to take BC. So I filled the prescription a few months after Brady was born, but I just couldn't get myself to take them. So I finally decided to not take them at all. Before we started treatments I was totally off birth control since 2000. My dh and I were married in 2000 and I stopped them the next day hoping we would get prego within the year. Little did I know it would take us 7 years to get pg!! So it's really hard for me to take them again. I feel like by taking them I'm messing around with something that I should just leave be.

We're definitely not looking to have another baby this soon, but if it happens, then it would be our 2nd miracle! Ideally we would like to start actively trying next summer. Right now we try to be really careful, especially around the time I OV, which I'm pretty good at detecting now. Became a Pro after all the treatments we went thru. So far it's working!!

It's definitely a very personal decision only you and your dh can make. If your really against taking BC again, then I would look into other more natural ways to prevent pregnancy. There are other choices. Good Luck!!
