How Fun!!
My DH is from SA...I love it there. We were just there a few months ago. I love the Riverwalk (DH asked me to marry him at the Riverwalk). There are so many great places to eat...hope you love Mexican Food, YUM!!! There are so many great little out of the way places, I honestly don't remember any of the names, sorry! I would ask the people at your hotel check-in desk, they'll likely give you great advice. As for where to stay, I would suggest staying somewhere on or around the Riverwalk. It is touristy, but you'll be close to lots of stuff that way. FYI, they are doing a lot of road work around the airport right now, so be prepared for that.
When my DH retires from the Army we plan on moving back to the SA area. Sorry I wasn't too much help, but I hope you have a great time!!!

Definitely try to stay on or near the Riverwalk. That is where all the restuarants/touristy stuff is. It's really pretty. If you like to shop there are some pretty good outlets north of San Antonio too! But, if you wont' have a car, that may not be an option.

Ft. Sam Houston is our dream assignment...but unfortunately the chance of him getting stationed there is slim to none. By the way, there is a Sea World in San Antonio, and if you want to go. Check out this link: Hero Salute It allows an active duty service member, and three of their dependents, to get into the park free of charge (one time a year)! Just be sure to bring your ID cards! You can print off your "tickets" before you go. We went last time we were in SA. I know Wyatt was too young, but it was free! Also, since Budweiser was sold to a foreign company the "Salute to Heroes" program may not be available for too much longer???

I grew up there...great place!!
Youhave to eat at TOMS RIBS! The river walk is great too!! The SA zoo is a fav, you also have Fiesta Texas-theme park, and Natural Bridge Caverns (right outside of SA). Anyway, lots to do there....lots of places to eat...and if you like country music...The Bluebonnet Palace. Well I have not lived there in about 17 years, so those places might not be the same or even there anymore. FT. Sam is a very nice base too!!
