WTH: Pinching, biting, and hitting

For the past week or so, my Joshie has bitten me, pinched me with his fingernails and hit me right smack in the face. I say "NO NO!" and he laughs in my face. Then will do it all over again. What is up with this and how do I get him to stop?

Blessings, Michelle

Mine laughed at other people's pain at that age and a little older, but I think it was more the dramatic reaction you can get when you hit, pinch, etc. Now when he inflicts or sees any kind of pain, he starts crying and says that he has an "owie" where the other person has been hurt.

I think the only thing you can do is say "NO" and walk away. Don't let any one else allow him to act that way (dad can't allow it if they are rough housing, etc.). He should stop.

I have a 2 year old and we went through a huge pushing stage.
That last post is right. You say no, and walk to another room, withdrawing all attention. I would also give an immediate time out for any hard bites, etc.
(we had to give a time out every time, and we gave it in the crib, even though youre not supposed to do it in the childs sleeping place, bc he wouldn't sit still in a chair. He just didnt understand) A time out should be 2 minutes for a 2 year old, 3 for 3, etc. so its really short.

anyway, at first it will seem like its not working, and the behavior will still repeat, but if you are totally constant, time will pass and your toddler will get the message, know there are limits, and then one day you will notice the phase is over, and your toddler has forgotten all about it.

Good luck!

Caitlin bites, pinches, and hits. She has smacked me in the face a couple of times ( just the usual flinging the arms). She pinches really hard, she isn't even paying attention though. The biting--that is intentional. I think it is the teething thing but now that she has both top and bottom it really hurts!!!

I too think they do it to see your reaction. If your shocked and your face shows it they may find it funny. I would just try to stay calm as possible and say to him that he is not allowed to bite, pinch ect. If he isn't getting the reaction out of you then it's not as funny.

If staying calm and collective isn't working then I would try a time out rug, corner or what ever will suit your situation

wow

have 5 god children, and they never displayed that behavior more than once, once they did it, they got time out and since we have such stern voices, they wanted no parts of what may have came next. My god daughter actually would do something and then hug you and stay there till she fell asleep, my god son would spank himself after he did something wrong, this freaked us out because we never had to pop those little thighs. Good luck with whatever you do but these behaviors if ur child is in daycare r not good ones. Even if u have company over I am sure they would not want to be bitten by ur child nor there kids. Maybe talk to ur peds about this behavior, also there is a book like what to expect when ur expecting, but it is what to expect in the toddler years.... hugs to you...

Funny you mentioned "What to Expect the Toddler Years"; I was looking for something to read last night and I've got shelves upon shelves of books. Well, I guess I had bought it but forgotten about it so I've got it out now and will refer to it.

Dh laughed at me the other day because right after Joshie hit me the second time, I smacked his hand and said "We don't hit!" I guess it was funny to dh because I smacked his hand then told him we don't do that, LOL. It was just my first reaction. I don't plan on doing it again.

Blessings, Michelle

I have been putting caitlin down if I am holding her when she does it. If she crawls to me and does it she goes in her playpen or crib for about 30 seconds. I am hoping this way she learns that doing those kinds of things takes her away from mommy. Guess we will see!

I can't imagine how tough that must be, Brady is not quite at that point yet. He does pull my hair tho, wow does it hurt!!!! Of course he thinks it's funny.

I know this girl who was having such a horrible time with her daugher biting. I guess she would even bite people that would come over her house. I know this sounds bad and probably wasn't the best thing to do, but it worked for her. She bit her back one day, obviously not that hard, but for a little girl it hurt, (probably scared her more than anything) and of course she cried. But the mother explained to her that that's what it felt like when she did it. She never bit anyone ever again! When she told me this stroy, I thought she was crazy! I don't know if I could do that. But it did work for her.

For me..I'd probably go with the "no, and walk away" lol

We had to do this with one of my nephews. The biting was horrible (he would headbut too) so my sister said to me, "bite him back!" I thought she was crazy till he drew blood on my sholder. I bit him back and he never bit me again! I didn't bite hard at all but it got his attention. I don't know why it works for some but it worked for him.

This little girl would even hide underneath tables and actually bite peoples ankles while they sat there..it was that bad. So finally the Mom had enough!

It's crazy how it works..sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Especially when it's that bad.

Hi

My Dh have been talking about how we ar going to discipline our child, we have a 15 1/2 yr old that is not bad at all but if he had issues at school bless to sure when he got home he had problems with us.... and we did not spare the rod, we r not child beaters but we had to do alot of behavior modification when he came to live with us 9 years ago.... now he is awesome... so the new baby hopefully will not give us any problems as he/she gets older.... yeah right... my DH asked me yesterday a funny question... he was like you weren't bad when u were young right??? I mean you had the normal teenage issues right? No honey funny u should ask by the age of 10, I was running away from home, and drinking and smoking... Just kidding ,but I guess he started thinking about our friends and their kids and how they r catching H--- with them and the old wise tale goes "you r going to have one just like you 1 day..... so beware, thankfully I wasnt that bad and neither was DH. So and prayers...

Well I have to say that i have delt with this both in my home and in the child care facility where i worked. Obviously the only thing we could do in the daycare was time out DID NOT WORK AND I WAS VEEEERRRRRY CONSISTANT. With collin it got bad adn he bit everyone except me and my dh...ok he bit us once but after we bit back he never did it again. His aunt was WAS SUPPER lax with him because they lost his brother so he bit her the most because she did not correct him at all. My mom he bit a couple times and she thumped him in the mouth and he quit real fast. I guess what i am saying is..we are not overly agressive with our child but i believe when a child is harming themselves or someone else they need to have physical action taken when verbal does not work..i.e. going in to the street, climbing on things they are not suppose to, hitting, biting, ect. It is ironic to say that you do not hit and hit but it is actually reenforcing why you do not hit (they see it hurts) and if they use their mouth (bithing) the mouth should be thumped if they use their hand (hitting) the hand should be spanked if they use their foot ( kicking) swat the leg....not hard but enough to get the attention if they bite and you swat their butt they dont understand that the two are related at that age. Anywho that is just my personal experience in working with children and having one. Physical dicipline is not for everyone and i know that but it is something my dh and i agree with when needed.
