My older son...piano lessons vs. guitar lessons

I'm going to check to see if we can afford both. Brad took a year of piano last year and enjoyed it and did well in his recital, but has now been bugging me for guitar lessons as well.

This kid is AMAZING on his Guitar Hero games and when he was first born...about 4 weeks old, he would wave his arms to the beat of whatever we were listening to. As soon as he could walk, he'd march to the beat and tap on tables etc. When he was in elementary school, his music teacher called me one time and told me she thought he'd make an excellent drummer for their band, but Brad refused. You should see him on Guitar Hero ( a video game with actual guitars) he can beat the expert level on "Devil Went Down to Georgia".

We saw the game Rock Band on sale at WalMart and got it and now he is learning how to drum too. I asked him what kind of music would he play on a guitar....he said anything heavy metal/rock.

Before I decided to have kids, I'd always dreamed of having a boy who played in a band (a rock band). Well, if the lessons aren't so expensive....I guess my dream may come true!

Blessings, Michelle

Hi Michelle...my DH plays guitar and teaches a couple kids in the neighborhood. He has 9 that include acoustic, "normal" looking , and those zig zaggy, spikey things from the 80's. Since we're having a boy he's already talking about when he'll start him on piano lessons. He says that's a great foundation for learning guitar so they understand all the fundamentals of music and notes. So, it's great that your son already started piano lessons...you have him ahead of the game without realizing it!

Even though your son is into Guitar Hero...I would imagine that any teacher would want to start lessons on an acoustic. Guitar Hero is nothing like a real guitar...they don't learn notes with that game (I initially thought it did would a have gotten it for myself to learn...DH looked at me like..."nice try" ). I guess my point is...if your son is really excited about guitar lessons and thinks he'll be strapped to an electric guitar during lessons...I highly doubt that would happen....especially for the first year. I know DH didn't get to that point until he had a handle on the acoustic. For the boys that come to our house it's torture seeing the electrics hanging around them so at the end of their lesson DH will let them pick which one they want to play and hook it up on the amp so they can "scream"....yeah for me

If you get to the point of actually buying a guitar(s) and have questions...feel free to PM me and I will ask DH for you. He can let you know where to get a good deal (ebay for example) or tell you which brand or style is the best for what you're looking for. Sometimes you can get a super deal on Ebay and it just needs a new 'pick up' or whatever that you could take to a guitar shop to have fixed. Good luck! ...Carie
