Brushing Teeth

At what age did you starting brushing your kids teeth? I bought a tooth brush and tooth paste by Orajel and it said from 4 months up. The paste is floride free, so it's ok for him to swallow. Brady has 3 teeth now, but my Ped hasn't said anything about it yet.

I haven't tried it yet, should be interesting!!!

This is a good question. Mine just got their first teeth over Labor day and I haven't even thought out this. My sil said that I should have been brushing their gums and yes should brush their new teeth. Guess I better get and and get two baby tooth brushes!

I started brushing Alex's teeth as soon as they started popping out. BECAUSE, ds1 was born with an enamel defect that caused him to have some early decay. He started getting flouride treatments at 9 mos. and is fine now. But, I was so afraid that Alex would have the same problem (he doesn't ) So I either brush his teeth with a little baby toothbrush, or at the very least wipe his teeth & gums with a cloth after he eats or has a bottle.

Whe I started brushing the boys' teeth I sang the ABC's (slow) and they knew that when the song was done we would be done brushing. As they got older I sang it twice. It seems to keeps the "lock jaw" to a minimum.

That is to funny...That is exactly what I do with Connor. Ha Ha. Any way I started brushing as soon as I saw teeth. I was actually wiping his gums before he had teeth. That is just one of my things...I like clean pretty teeth. Just a little note Connor seems to prefer the bubble gum flavor.

I just asked my dentist the other day! She said to brush as soon as you see any teeth at all. She even said you can wipe the gums down prior to any teeth (like others mentioned). She told me not to use anything other than the toothbrush and water - no toothpaste at all until they can spit and even then you only need the smallest amount.

Good luck!

I just brushed Kate's teeth (she now has 6) tonight for the first time and it went very well. Probably because she watches Gracie brush hers and she wants to do EVERYTHING that Gracie does!

Thanks ladies..I didn't get the chance to brush them tonight, Brady was so tired that he went to bed early. Very fussy too, I think he's getting he's 2nd top tooth (that will be 4 all together!!). So I might try tomorrow morning if I have time before he leaves for the sitter. If not I'm definitely starting tomorrow night after his bath.

Thanks again!!

Oh also..the paste I bought is from Baby Orajel. I just looked at it and it's clear and more like a gel than paste. It's banana strawberry flavored and fluoride free!!

I always brush Caitlin's in the morning right after doing mine. I don't do hers every day and I always hold her while I brush mine, seems to be the only way she won't scream her head off. She really hates it!

I brush Alex's teeth every night. We also use the Orajel paste too and it is safe for them to swallow. The earlier they get use to it, the easier it will be in the long run. Happy brushing Brady!!

we started brushing around 6 months. Makenna is almost two now so she brushes hers while I brush mine and when I am finished I help her finish up. She loves to have her teeth brushed

I was wondering the same thing, although Ethan still doesn't have his first tooth through yet. He just watches me while I do mine with such wonder and amazement. I have seen the baby orajel toothpaste but haven't bought anything yet.

Well we started last night after his bath. I stood him up in front of the mirror so he could see too. It was really funny, all he wanted to do was suck on the tooth brush. The paste is strawberry banana, so I think he like that the most!! We brushed again this morning and he really likes it, just looks at me and laughs. So cute!

I'm glad Brady already likes having his teeth brushed. We started Gianni when he first starting to get a tooth but we had a rubber tipper nubby brush that he chewed on while teething so he does the same with his tooth brush he just clamps down and chews while I try to brush.

The day after I posted on here that she hated it and would scream she let me do it without a fight. Now she lets me do it and then she gets to play with the tooth brush for a couple of minutes--she tried to actually brush her own teeth this morning!!! Guess she just needed another day!
