Did you experience this with your baby?!?
Hey Ladies,
My one month old stopped having **'s a couple of days ago. His little belly is distended and he grunts, turns red, and his little eyes start to water. It wakes him up from sleep too. We took him to the doc on TH and the doc got him to pee and have a ** with a rectal exam. 24 hours later still no ** - so we then gave him a baby laxative and he pooped a ton within 2 hours. But here we are 18 hours later and no natural **. He used to do 3-5 a day. I know at some point BMs happen less and less but I am so concerned because his belly is distended and seems very uncomfortable. BTW - he is a breastfed baby. I left a message for his pediatrician and I haven't heard back from him. I am contemplating a trip to the ER but don't want to subject him to tests he doesn't need if this is all normal. HELP!!

My baby did the same thing. I would give her a piece of a suppository every 3 days if she didn't go. My doc said not to worry unless it had been more than 5 days. I guess with BF babies they use so much of the nutrients that there is not much left to dispose of. This all happened to my dd at the same age. Good Luck.

The constipation happened to us as well. The ped took a rectal temp and low and behold we have achieved a poopy diaper. She told us that the stimulation helped her and that we could do the same. At a month old they also told us we could give her prune juice (not a big fan of giving her juice at 4 wks).
Good luck, let us know how it goes.

how old is your baby? simon did that when he was about 3 months old and i heard from many others on here who'd experienced the same thing. i also checked some baby books and websites and found that babies can start going 3-5 days without having one.

Our Dr. doesn't worry about it for up to 7 days with bf babies. Mine once went 9 days without going. He wasn't uncomfortable or distended though. I also used the rectal thermometer trick, prunes and prune juice as well. He was 4 months old, though.

Thank you ladies for your replies. The Doc finally got back to us at 5 pm yesterday
Sorta frustrated at that!By that time Spencer had had 2 BMs. Phew! But the doc mentioned that he may need to be seen by a proctologist since he is in pain while trying to have a **. At most he may need minor surgery on his rectal muscles ![]() Y'all are the best for taking the time to reply and rest my fears! Jess

Wow - surgery sounds very extreme.
All the books i have read say that a babies B M could be anywhere from 1 once a day to once a week. are you using any little tummies or mylacon? i know it is used to relieve the gas pains, but it also has the baby releasing more gas thus forcing the use of those muscles. I hope you dont have to go the route of surgery. It might also be worth while to see an infant chiropractor to see if they can do an adjustment that can help with the proper blood flow to that area and make it easier for a B M to occur.
