Changing a baby's name, my story. Just sharing :)

We changed one of our babies names a few months after birth. It was a very interesting change to feel unfold. I wonder if anyone has changed a baby's name, or knows a story about a name change. HEre is ours. Just felt like sharing.

this is how our experience went.
As time went on after the birth, we both felt increasingly that we had gotten little baby A.'s name wrong. We had named her Rosalie Sarah. (Her twin, Violet Amelia). It had been a very difficult naming process after the birth. So much gonig on with lactation, a traumatic birth, etc etc, exhaustion, two very young older siblings, etc.

At first the names were working out ok. Then we realized that we didnt like the two flower thing. Rosalie was getting shortened to Rose, and Rose and Violet was turning out to be just too much.) we hadnt intended it.

Additionally, with the weeks, we were becoming more and more embarrased to even SAY the name that we had originally chosen for her (rosalie ), and always found oursleves introducing Baby Violet first, since we both loved THAT name. Silly. I know. But true.

First we discussed the discomfort we felt, and decided to see if it persisted. It did. It was difficult because Sarah is a family name on DH's side that his family had really pushed for, but we felt like neither of the names we had initially chosen really fit her, and knew they both had to go. We knew there was the potential for hurt feelings.

A few weeks later we had the same discussion again, and again waited. The feelings we both had didnt disperse. That settled it. We had gotten the little bird's name wrong. Then we discussed possible replacement names and settled on the first name we had actually thought of for her first in the hospital, Siena Rose, which my husband had picked initally, and then passed over. Next we secretly tried the name out on her at home for a month. We took our time feeling the way it felt to call her Siena. Then we concluded that it felt right, and announced it to one family and then the other. I emailed my entire extended family a week before our big reuinion so she could make her big debut to all the cousins donning the right name.
DH told his side in person.

Anyway, now we have it right, and it feels good. We still call her Rose, but love calling her Siena, and introducing her as Siena. Her big brother still calls her Rosalie sometimes, and thats ok with us. Its a cute name too and that can be one of the special name he calls his sister. We use lots of nicknames in our family. I still call her Rose, or Rosebud, sometimes too. But its more of a nickname, and Rose in now her middle name, after all. Her little personality is much more of a Siena. ...and Im just so glad they both arent officially flowers now too!!

I have yet to make the change legally. In our state its a long process involving seeing a judge and pubnlishing the change in a newspaper for four consecutive weeks. The legal change will take place sometime within the next year, when I feel like things have settled down just a little bit more,.

any other stories out there??

I totally get what you are saying and I am glad that I am not the only one!

My morning sickness never went away and I was sick all day long which means that my pregnancy was pretty horrible. We ended up delivering at 30 weeks which was crazy as well. Between one thing and another we had a really hard time deciding what to name our babies.

The ironic part is that while I was pregnant we decided that our dd would be Alexa Isabel and my ds Imanol Rafael (the middle name was after my dh's grandfather). As time went by and people reacted to my ds name, we realized that Imanol was hard for people to understand even if they spoke spanish!

So after the emergency delivery and, while in the hospital, we decided to name our son Alejandro.

Here is the ironic part...our son is now completely and totally an Alejandro Imanol. His name totally fits. However, my daughter who we never hesitated on her name, is a different story.

The whole Alexa and Alejandro (double A) thing is just too cutesy. And I am not a cutesy kind of girl!

We didnt even think in the hospital that people would call each of them Alex! Ughhhh!

Anyway, I sometimes think that we should have named her differently...but she has now become Alexa.

I still find myself looking for a nickname so if you have any ideas send them my way.

Good luck!

You could call her Lexi and your son Ale. Glad to hear that your babies are doing well even with your early delivery.

We have struggled with our daughter's name as well. We are adopting her and her birth name is Gabriella. We both think it is a beautiful name and I had always said I would keep one of the names her mother gave her. Her middle name is awful so it will have to go. We initially told everyone we were going to just call her Gabriella. After about a month it wasn't working. Everyone was calling her Gabby (which my DH and I hate, sorry to anyone who has Gabby's, it's just not my preference). We started to think of names to call her and of course Bri and Ella popped into our minds. Didn't last long because we have friends who have girls with both of those names. Had I had my own daughter her name would have been Abigail and we would have called her Abby. I told DH why don't we just drop the G and nickname her Abby. He agreed and she is now Abby. We had to tell everyone and they were ok with it. my 3 year old son still calls her Gabriella. It's ok though since it is still her name. Sometimes the name just doesn't fit the child and we have to do what's best for the everyone in the long run.

I think Abby is a great short form of Gabrielle, and LOVE what you are doing, going to lengths to honor the gift of part of her name from the birth mom. Very beautiful. I think Abby is really cute. Great job with graceful handling!

Krista - Thank you for your well wishes! I see that your daughter is close to my twin's age. Aren't you tired?! I'm tired but loving it. Thank you for the suggestions on the nicknames. I love Lexi but for some reason it just doesn't roll off my tongue very easily. Any more ideas?

Laurie - Hiiiiiiiii! I sent you a quick pm. Love to see that you are doing well.

my friend's sister is named Alexa, but everyone either calls her Lexa or Lexi, never A-Lexa.
You could always just come up with another nickname too, either just random or maybe based off of her middle name...My daughter's name will be Samantha Georgiana, and since I'm not too fond of the nickname Sam and probably wont be calling her Samantha all the time, I was thinking my nickname for her could be Georgie

Sweetpea!!! I had no idea you were trying again, much less that you delivered twins this time!! Congratulations!!! Since our Nov 08 baby thread faded, I've not really been on here.

We just got our BFP this week, beta's and u/s to come soon

I think it is wonderful and brave of you to change the name. I've met a few people in my life that I thought had the wrong names...including myself. "Melissa" has NEVER seemed like the right name for me...possibly b/c every female born in the mid 70s has that name (not really, but it feels that way sometimes!).

Naming a child is a very big deal and sometimes our little ones just don't fit their names we've chosent. Marlee fits DD to a tee, as does DSS's names. We've decided to not know the gender of this little one until birth. We'll have to pick a girl name and a boy name, just in case. It would be hard to have to change the ones we picked if, once the baby is here, it doesn't fit...much better to do it young than let them walk around the rest of their lives with the wrong name.

I, personally, LOVE Rosealie, but if it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit.

Good for you guys!!!

Melissa!!!! great to hear from you!! how exciting about your BFP! and this week! what wonderful news! Im so stoked for your family! Ill be following your pregnancy now! I hope you stick around the forums welcome back. btw, your avatar picture of your little M are just ADORABLE!!! Just look at that beautiful little blondie!

Yeah, Rosalie just didnt end up being the name. We have someone very spunky and resilient on our hands that needed a name with a little more flare, style and sass. Her twin, Violet is the calmest most doe eyed and vulnerable seeming little innocent. Siena on the other hand is very ambitious, strong and stiff bodied, silly and outgoing. It was clear to us what we needed to do. And we spell Siena with one N instead of two to have her named after the Italian city, not the color. (avoiding two of anything.) but I too really loved the name Rosalie. Its a very sweet and beautiful name, and shortens to ROse, which I did really like.... but we rreally were having a hard time saying her name to others too, which just goes to show that something wasnt quite right. I cant wait to hear more about your journey!!! do you have names yet??
