Good morning ladies -

Robin - bring on the baby(s)!!!!! We are so excited - I can only imagine how you and irina are feeling today!

TMI alert - I am a little concerned about LP. You know how he always tests borderline low on his hemoglobin and how he has to take multivitamins with iron? That's something that has always made me wonder in the back of my head - why is he always broderline anemic? So this morning I change his diaper and his stool is totally black and tarry. This can be caused by a couple things, but typically it is old blood. He hasn't eaten any red meat lately, no beets at all, but he did eat quite a few blueberries yesterday. I don't think that would have caused his stool to be soooooo black though. So - here's the gross part - I collected a sample and am bringing it to my old job to have it tested for blood. I am hoping it is nothing, and probably would have waited to see if his next one was the same, but with the borderline anemia always, it's got me wondering. Fingers crossed he's just turning into a blueberry and it is nothing more serious.

Robin - is it 11:30 yet?

AM- dd used to have blood in her stool rather frequently and the dr actually wasn't bothered by it- it was because she ate so much fruit and went to the bathroom so much, that she irritated the end of her bowels... now THAT might be tmi, but just don't panic if it does have blood.

Robin- i'm here waiting for you!

Meg- I CANNOT believe you don't have the number that safe! Definately get it from dh's best friend!

Thanks!! Now I don't feel so hurried to get over there and get it tested.

LOL - it was A LOT of blueberries! I thought he had gone on a blueberry strike because he wouldn't touch them for about a week. Then I stopped cutting them in half and he ate a TON yesterday - must have been making up for all those days he had none.

AM - here you go...

A black stool caused by food, supplements, medication, or minerals is known as "false melena." Iron supplements, taken alone or as part of a multivitamin for iron-deficient anemia, may cause stools to be black or even greenish in color. Foods that are dark blue or black in color may also cause black stools. Substances that can cause false melena are:
  • Black licorice
  • Blueberries
  • Iron supplements
  • Lead
  • Bismuth (Pepto-bismol)

Thanks Robin - let's go with the blueberries and not the LEAD!! Good grief!!

Funny thing - When I was changing his diaper, I was running through a list in my head of what could cause it and thought, "Well, he hasn't had any Pepto lately that I know of!".
