Worried about babys neck strength

Okay, so I don't know if it is because I have twins and have someone to compare one of my girls to on a daily basis but I have one baby (Presley) which I personally feel is unusually strong and sits up and looks around and when you carry her on the shoulder she will hold her head up and look all around. Then I have Avery which has had a harder start to begin with that I don't know if she is just lazy or if she is behind but she can be like a bobble head doll. When I am feeding her and have to burp her I am still having to hold her head up under her neck. If I don't she just lets if flop down on her chest. It's hard not to compare her to Presley but I think that even if we didn't have Presley I would still be concerned. I asked the doctor about it when we went on the 14th and he said to give it more time that she was fine and not to compare the 2 babies. Do any of you have any experiences with this? I have been trying to pull her up gently by her arms when she is laying down and when I do that she will bring her head up with no problem. She has no problems when we do tummy time either but she will only turn her head from side to side...she doesn't even try to pull her head striaght up. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I guess I should mention to that she definitely does have a bigger head than Presley but still. Presley's head measured in like the 50% percentile and Avery was like in the 96% percentile. She kinda had to "grow" into her head but now her head is definitely proportioned to the rest of her body.

Laurie, have you mentioned this to your pediatrician or has he/she shown concern? I don't have to hold Ethan's head anymore, in fact I have to try and push it back from time to time when he tries to sit up on his own while on our legs waiting to be fed. But I also don't have anyone to compare this to - you know?

Yes, I mentioned in the first post that when I said something to him about it he told me that I did not need to be concerned yet and that as easy as it was to do I couldn't compare the two babies. That one would always do something before the other from this point on. That was on the 14th though so it's been almost a month. It's just that we don't go back to the doctor until the 13th of July. I don't know if I should just wait until then or what.

laurie, i read Joy's blog yesterday and one of her girls keeps tilting her head in one direction and won't hold it staight... her Ped is also not concerned... her muscles are just not strong enough to hold her head straight... i can't remember the details, though.

PS: i can PM you her blog if you are interested...

Sorry for not getting all the way through your initial post Laurie, sometimes I jump the gun. Does Avery get floor time, tummy time? I have heard that tummy time is a great way to strengthen their neck muscles as they push themselves up and hold their heads up. I would be the same way if I had twins, I'd always be comparing one's milestones to the other.

Jen - I mentioned the tummy time part in the first post too. When she is on her tummy she has no problem picking her head up to turn it from side to side but she doesn't even try to pick it up and hold it up.

Robin- I read that on Joy's blog too. I think her e-mail address is on her blog. I may try to e-mail her and ask her about it. I know I need to keep in perspective that she is just right at 3 months. I just don't want anything to be wrong and if it is maybe there is something we can do. I'm sure I'm probably jumping the gun.

Hi Laurie -

I'm wondering if the fact that they were preemies has anything to do with it. Has your pediatrician mentioned milestones for preemies and adjusted ages? I know Presley can do it and she is the same age, but maybe she is unusually strong for a preemie, you know?

Good luck - I know how stressful it can be when we are concerned about our babies.

Laurie, our girls have the same issue. Our pedi has not mentioned any concern. She thinks they're doing fine. Both our girls still are like bobble heads. I wouldn't worry at all. We still hold their heads when burping them as well. We also do tummy time and pull them up when we can. They seem to be fine doing that as well, but are still working on building those muscles.

Laurie-
3 mos is still young, plus they were premature, so I would think that would give her a little more leeway with her timing. My son is 6 mos now and has always hated tummy time and basically did the exact same thing as your daughter- kind of lift his head and turn to the side and then let it drop (when he was about her age). I had been so worried about it, but let me tell you, he is awesome now at belly time lifting the head and his whole torso off the ground and pushing with his arms. The point is, I am sure it will come with time and I really do think different babies have their own timing. It sounds perfectly normal for her age. By 4 mos I bet she'll be holding her head well when she is upright, but FYI, it took my guy till 4 1/2 to 5 months to get really good when on his tummy. Don't worry!

Laurie - Don't worry. We had a bobble head for months too over here! Aiden's head is always in the top 10% too. But, now at 5 months he has great head control! I would just keep doing tummy time as much as she'll tolerate and when she is on her back pull her up a little by the arms. Aiden loved that game and become obsessed with it after a few days. I think that helped lots with the head control. I know it must be tough always having someone to compare too. I can't remember - is Avery the one with reflux too? If so, she may really start to enjoy tummy time. With the reflux, Aiden has always loved being on his tummy. If she isn't so amused, put some toys around her that light up or play sounds for her to watch. Have you tried using a Bumbo at all? We use that a lot too and I think it helped Aiden gain some upper body strength.

Yay for the bumpos!! You'll finally have some hands free moments again Aiden spends lots of time in his. I'll put him next to the sink while I wash dishes or on top of the dryer while I fold laundry. You'll love them!
