So Confused.. Please help!

I am 26 years old. I have done 3 cycles of clomid, 3 IUI's, and this past month 1 IVF w/ICSI (All unsuccessful). My doctor retreived 17 eggs and only 4 fertlized, and only 2 survived to be transfered on day 3. Anyway, I get regular periods (on the dot every month), I also am not extremely overweight (about 20 pounds overweight). I don't have the typical symptoms which I have read online about PCOS. However, my doctor said that he thinks that I have PCOS due to my "low egg quality", and because my 2 hour Glucose and Insulin Tolerance test showed that my insulin levels are high. Is it possible for me to get regular periods, have regular FSH levels, yet still have PCOS??? Oh yes, I do have thinning hair, oily skin, and I could never find ovulation (with the home ovulation kits). Is my doctor labeling me too soon or could I really have PCOS??? Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Yes, it is possible. I would hope that he does further testing to evaluate you for this before just diagnosing.

I have pcos and I am only slightly overweight (about 25 pounds) and never missed a period, they are pretty much always regular. I had a normal FSH level, elevated insulin level and and elevated total testosterone level. Another sign is elevated cholesterol. I never had any of the excess body hair, acne, painful ovarian cysts or missed periods that are classic signs. My RE told me that it is possible to have mild case of it in which you don't get all of the obvious symptoms.

I definitely would not ignore it, but I think you may need some further work up. I am currenly on Metformin to treat mine, but unfortunately my husband has sever mf, so we need to proceed to IVF.

Good luck and I hope that helps!

I was just recently diagnosed with PCOS. My previous doctor never did a glucose test on me and the new doctor within the first visit suspected PCOS and did the glucose testing. The found out that I have hyperinsulinemia, my insulin level was 123 when it should be below 17. They say that causes low egg quality which I had with my previous IVF. I too have normal periods (every 28 days), FSH was 6, estrogen and prgoesterone always normal. So I think your doctor is on the right track. I have been reading that so many women go undiagnosed with PCOS because not everyone gets the same symptoms. For the past couple of years my doctor kept telling me it was unexplained.

My husband and I have been trying for a little over a year. My RE said that I have PCOS but I am not sure. Without BCP it takes me about 45 to 60 days before I get my period. I have a little acne but not a lot. I was overweight about a year ago but am no longer. Is it possible that I don't have PCOS or if I do that it is a mild case. I just feel confused and have a hard time believing that I have PCOS when they only problem I have is that my periods are so irregular.

PCOS is pretty straightforward to diagnose with a blood test - your LH to FSH ratio is out of wack. Basically you aren't ovulating, and it's pretty normal to have irregular cycles. It used to drive me crazy because I was sure the pregnancy test HAD to be wrong when my period still hadn't come at day 45.

Also, if you have PCOS the ovulation kits aren't reliable unless you are on meds. Because your LH is elevated you'll get a false positive. My kit was positive for like 6 days in a row.

I am not overweight (in fact, I'm at the low end of my range) and don't have any of the other visual symptoms except maybe some extra hair here and there.

thanks for the info. I am not sure if my RE checked my lh or fsh. He did do bloodwork and everything came back normal. I asked him for the results and was given a copy but I don't see anything about lh or fsh. Should I ask him if he tested those?
