Just wondering . . .
I have been on provera for several years. My ob/gyn put me on it for days 1-10 of each month to regulate my cycle. Without it (the provera) my cycle was a disaster! I'd even miss work because it was so bad (heavy, long, frequent, etc). The provera worked wonders! I could count on my cycle appearing on the about the 12th of each month -- in which my cycle would last 3-4 days. Two months ago a regular endocrinologist started me on metformin (1500mg/day) -- for a presumed dx of PCOS. Since starting the metformin, my cycle has started the 7th of each month, while I was still on the provera -- and lasting 6-7 days. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Is it normal? Is it the metformin that is making the changes in my cycle?? I have not yet seen a RE, but have an appt on 10/6. It is definitely a question I will ask her, but in the meantime, thought I'd ask you all. Thanks! Susan |

My doc said that sometimes the metformin can regulate periods or help women ovulate who haven't in the past. Maybe thats whats going on....have you tried not using the provera for one month and see if you start naturally?

Thanks for the reply. No, I haven't stopped the Provera to see what happens. I still have not found a dr who is willing to say "YES, PCOS is what your problem is", only dr's that are willing say "PCOS MIGHT be your problem." I have been to a regular endocrinologist, he won't touch it other than to say maybe. I go to my regular obgyn tomorrow actually, he's gonna get grilled to see what I can find out. Then on 10/6 I go to a RE. Hopefully she will be able to give me an answer one way or the other. SO, back to your original question "...have you tried not using the provera for one month and see if you start naturally?" -- no I haven't because I am afraid to it with out dr supervision. I can say that the last 2 months AF has started 5 days earlier than I am used to! And I have been on the metformin for about 2 1/2 months so . . . . .

my fear however, isn't that the provera is to just regulate how often AF comes, but to regulate how heavy/lite she is. before taking the provera the flow was unmanageable. it was so heavy it was causing me to leave work early or miss it all together . . . .
but i will certainly talk to dr in the morning and see what he says. i'll keep you posted. |

I am on both Metformin and Synthroid.
I stopped my Depo Provera shots last year and am still trying to regulate my cycles. During my most recent cycle I had to go to the GYN because it was unbearable. I found out that I was having "Non Ovulatory" Cycles. We are now in the midst of a "Chemical Induced D&C" using a 2 week run of Provera, and attempting to increase my Metformin Dose. We'll see...fingers crossed! ![]() |

I was diagnosed with PCOS at a young age. I married for almost 10 years. I've had surgery twice to have cycts removed and I've still had no luck. I just recently had the second surgery and I return for my check-up on 11/18/08 to see what the out come is. I have been on metformin on and off during this whole thing and I still have yet to have a regular cycle. I haven't had a normal cycle since I was 14-15 years old and I'll be 30 in a couple weeks!
So the treatment and pills differ with each person. |

I understand what you mean when I was on the metformin w/ and with out the provera my cycle was never predictible and I even would go to where while I was on it I would go months with no cycle at all. I have a dr appt soon and I am hoping to get more insight about getting pregnant with pcos.
