Help!!!!! I Need Someone To Explain This!!!!
I just heard from my doctor and he stated that from what he could see on my ultrasound I am borderline PCOS so he will treat me as if I have PCOS (what ever that means???) He has prescribed Metformin that he wants me to take for 3 months and if I don't get pregnant after 3 months then he will put me on Clomid. He stated that I have follicles but they are not maturing on their own and that is why he wants me to take metformin. Can anyone help clarify this more....I want to be sure I understand what is going one COMPLETELY!!!!!! I am not sure if this is good news or bad news. Are there any side effects to metformin??????
to be soon!!!! |

klinzer - I have PCOS and have been where you are. They say that pcos is one of the easiest fertility issues to overcome (might be so.. but the people who said that have never tried or felt this frustration). I know you feel overwhelmed right now. Do some research, you'll probably be surprised about what you find out. I was reading all sorts of pamphlets from my doctors office and all the research online going 'oh yeah.. that makes sense now'.
My ovaries have lots of follicles in them all the time. Instead of my body picking one follicle to develop and turn into a mature egg... my body decides to share the wealth with all the follicles. Then.. no egg matures completely and no egg releases and I never ovulate (without assistance) Everyone is different. Everyone's body works different. I too tried metformin and clomid. They say that metformin can really increase your chances to achieve pregnancy naturally or with clomid and iui. Metformin does have some uncomfortable side effects, but most go away after being on it for a while. I had really bad diarrhea if I ate unhealthy foods. So I started on a lower dose and worked my way up. This does eventually go away, but it did suck for a while (just keep thinking of your goal :-) I know I've gone on and on and on... I hope I helped, even if just a little bit. I wish you all the luck in the world, and your dreams come true!

metformin and pcos
Hi,
I have been ttc for over 6 years and was just diagnosed with pcos (not positively, but have many of the signs). Started metformin a few days ago. It makes you feel a little lousy stomach wise with diarreah being the most common side effect. It hasn't been too bad, though. i'm also going to start letrozole today, which is an alternative to clomid. I wouldn't be too nervous about the metformin. See what happens, I feel like it's not invasive and a good starting point after the diagnosis of pcos. |

Hi Klinzer,
I've been on Metformin for a few months now. My doc told me that most women with PCOS have high blood sugar levels and this is why metformin is prescribed to most women (metformin is apparently usually prescribed to people with diabetes). Like some of the previous posters have mentioned, diarrhea is the most common side effects. I find that when I'm eating healthy I don't even get that. I try to stay away from starchy foods and white breads, pastas, rice etc. and that usually helps. I stick to whole wheat when I feel the need for carbs and don't have any side effects. Sometimes, I do endulge in a piece of cake or nice fresh Italian bread or something like that, knowing full well that I'll be feeling the side effects in a few short hours. Good luck on your journey of trying to get !!
