Completely Lost! :(

Hey ladies, I was hoping someone would be able to answer a few questions for me.. I was diagnosed with Amenorrhea and PCOS in February, after two years of TTC with no luck. My GYN was more than willing to put me on a BCP, but as soon as I starting talking about getting pregnant, she completely shut it down and made it obvious that she felt I am too young. I'm 22 and happily married. I am now looking for a new doctor. (If anyone knows of any in the Orlando, Florida area, please let me know.)

However, I wasn't ever treated for the Amenorrhea (not sure if I should have been, or if there is a specific treatment?) and now I am spotting on an almost daily basis, and have been for the past two to three months. And I've also noticed that after intercourse, there is bleeding as well. Is this "normal"?

Also, I've tried what feels like every diet out there over the past five or six years, and all I seem to be doing is gaining weight.. Is there anything that has worked for anyone else?

And finally, I know our bodies are all different, but what treatments have worked for you all? Is there anything I should be asking my new doctor, as far as tests and treatment options?

Dear Mommywannabe09,

I have the same diagnosis that you were given. Are you currently on BCP? I had awful spotting issues on BCP. I had to try several pills before I ever got relief from spotting. I ended up doing well on Mircette with no spotting and very little side effects.

Were you ever tested for insulin resistance? It is an underlying cause of PCOS and can cause weight gain. It is a simple blood test.

BCP will treat the amenorrhea (which is just the absence of period) and is often a result of PCOS. Obviously, if you want to concieve, you will be taken off BCP, but the RE can prescribe you pills to take that will induce a cycle (Provera or prometrium-this one caused me obnoxious spotting issues, but the provera did great)

Overcoming infertility is not a short process and can often take years, so i say if you and your dh are ready to start...go for it. You have much better chances of ovecoming your infertility issues at a younger age.

Yes, she had originally put me on Femcon Fe, which I experienced terrible side effects from and so I went back to see her. I was told that everything that was happening was completely normal and to just continue the BCP.. Although I told her that it was to the point that I couldn't work and would just lay in bed most of the day with headaches, stomach pains, and ridiculous spotting.

The insulin resistance was brought up on my visit to learn all of the test results, but I was never given any specific treatment for it, because she told me that the BCP was going to balance that all out.

She told me that when I was a little older she would be willing to put me on Metformin, to help with conception.. But refused to prescribe anything other than the BCP right now.

After trying for these two years, it already feels like it's been forever and most days I just feel like giving up and working on accepting the fact that I will never have a child of my own. But after taking it upon myself to learn more about my conditions, I realized that maybe it's not all me, maybe it's the treatment I was (or was not) receiving.

I'm hoping I can find another doctor soon that will be willing to help.

Well, I'm currently searching.
But I guess I'm just a little nervous/afraid to go to another doctor after this experience.

I would definately find another doctor. No one has the right to tell you 22 is too young. But keeping in mind you are 22 you have some time to figure things out. Search the web, ask friends, things will come together for you. Good luck and best wishes!

By the way- i also have PCOS and metformin worked for me. I do not have the other issue you mentioned so I can;t help with that.

Yeah, I'm definitely looking for a new doctor. I know I am very young, and that alot of women my age are still in their partying and going crazy stage.. so I understand why she would've immediately thought that. But the way that she was just unwilling to help and made that very clear, upset me to the point I just left her office in tears, was unacceptable.

Anyway, thanks for your response and congratulations on your pregnancy!

Doctor in Orlando

Hi mommywannabe,

I was dx with the same in Feb of 09. Since then, I've been on a mad dash to find some answers. My search led me to Dr. Trolice in Orlando (His practice is called Fertility CARE.) He and his staff are simply wonderful. I would highly recommend him. My husband and I are just starting IVF and feel completely comfortable with the care we are receiving. Best of luck and wishes for you!!

I Just wanted to say that I agree with the others, you should definitely find a new Dr. You have the advantage that you are young right now so you can figure it out and see what it's going to take for you to get pregnant. I have PCOS without insulin resistance. I have not had a period on my own since I was about 15 years old. My periods started and stopped almost at the same time, they were never irregular, they just became non-existent unless I took bcp or provera. I have wanted a baby since I was like 5 (literally, lol) but after dating my high school sweetheart for 10 years, we broke up not long after getting engaged. Then I started to live the life that I had missed out on being with a serious boyfriend since I was only 14. I was 28 by the time I finally found my husband, 30 by the time we got married and we began TTC almost immediately since i knew it was going to be a tough task. All the doctors in the past had said "just go on bcp to have a cycle, we really don't investigate infertility issues unless you're ttc". So, finally when I was ready to TTC, we had to run the standard obstacle course to see what would happen. Clomid was a waste of 4 cycles, I didn't even ovulate on the highest dosage 250mg. I then went straight to an RE where I was immediately dx'd with PCOS at the first ultrasound of my ovaries (even though 4 years prior I told my reg ob/gyn that I researched and had some symptoms of PCOS, she just brushed it off) I did injectibles w/IUI, no luck and we had to do IVF. Finally had the baby I thought I was never going to have but at the age of 33 after 2yrs hardcore medicated TTC. We are now ttc #2 since Feb with 3 failed IVF's. We are starting again in January with new insurance but with my poor embryo quality and increasing age, I am starting to think my baby boy won't have a sibling. I encourage you to take your fertility into your own hands, and start doing all the research now. I wish I knew what I know now at the early 20's stage. I never would have waited until the timing was "just right". You on the other hand, are already married so don't let a Dr. decide for you when you should have your children. GL to you and I hope you can find a great Dr. to help you get your BFP!!
