dealing with pcos.

I am 28 have been married for 2 years trying ttc. Feb of this year I was told I have PCOS. It wasn't hard to hear that since I have gained almost 50 pounds since dec of 08. My doctor started me on metformin assuring me that it would help lose weight and not to give up my diet and the exercise I was already doing trying to lose weight. I have taken metformin everyday since she perscribed them to me and have not lost any weight and can't get pregnant. Had a period in July that lasted 2 weeks but nothing since then. That 2 weeks I was off work because I was sick the entire time because the last one I had before that was in Dec of 08. I have gotten depressed to the point where I dont talk to anyone.

Heart I feel your pain

I have been TTC for 3 years with my husband. I have gained anywhere from 50- 70 lbs since 2005. I was younger then and much more active (In the military). I have 2 daughters from a previoius relationship but my husband doesn't have any biological children. I found out that I have PCOS and my gyn put me on Metformin and Clomid. I did 3 cycles on the Clomid and no luck . I did lose wieght though. I weighed in at 276 in June 2011 and today I'm 240 . I think that the 1500 mg of Metformin along with a diet change and walking helped.
But after 3 cycles of Clomid, I wanted to go to the next step. My gyn said that outside of pills that she couldn't do anything else so she referred me to a fertility specilist . Thank GOD for that because Dr. John L. Frattarelli, a board certified reproductive endocrinologist, obstetrician and gynecologist who formerly served for 6 years (2000 to 2006) as the Medical and Practice Director for the Tripler IVF Institute in Honolulu, HI said that there isn't a very high success rate with Clomid for women with PCOS. I was upset that my gyn didn't know that but relieved at the same time because now we're on the right track. So far I have done every test for infertility known to man to include genetic blood tests on me and hubby. He's had 2 seman analysts and I did an HSG that showed good tubes and have a saline hysterogram scheduled for 10-28-11. If that checks out then I move on to Follistim and Menopur.
I would ask your Dr about the success rates for Clomid before you get stuck on a Rx that doesn't really work well with PCOS. Many gyns perscribe it because they can't do many other treatments in their practices and plus it's cheaper than the other drugs.
I wish you much luck, and I pray that you get out of your depression. You will need a healthy body and mind to continue on this journey.

PCOS relief!

I have been dealing with this issue since my teens (28 now) and recently I saw a Naturopath Doctor who suggested Ovablend (look it up on Amazon). It works wonders!!! I have only been using it a week and already am seeing less male patterned hair growth. No side effects (for me anyway. Don't know if others have). Email me if you want to talk about it msaliciacray@yahoo.com

Clomid is very unsuccessful in women with PCOS. My recommendation is if you are not already seeing one go see a reproductive endocrinologist...they are miracle workers!! . Gonal-F has very good success with PCOS women as well as menopur.

Lis,
Thanks for your updates! I never even tried Clomid because of what you said- apparently not a good option for PCOS. Of course everyone who is going through infertility thinks it's the first step, but they don't undestand that it's just not the solution for us 'cysters'.
I'm starting to respond to Gonal F, but I was wondering if you knew the estrogen when it was "too high"? My estrogen shot up, but my follicles are still not big enough to stim.
I'm so happy to hear your story-- it give me hope that injectables are the way to go and hoping I won't have to resort to IVF.

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 21 and have been trying off an on for about 9 years. I did not respond at all to clomid. Most women with PCOS I know do not respond to it. There are a lot of herbal remedies that I have tried. None seemed to work. The only time it happened naturally was when I was not really trying to get pregnant. Failed IUI and injectables. Even an etopic IVF. Now going for FET. My ob/gyn had no idea I had PCOS and when clomid didnt work I went to an RE, who took one look via u/s said yep definitely. I dont have any facial hair or prediabetic or over weight. I am an atypical PCOS and that made it longer to diagnose. Everything is hormonal for me. Ugh.
