I also did not have side effects from Met. It should be really helpful, and yes I have heard of previously IF women taking Met and conceiving. Good luck!

I started seeing a decrease in acne breakouts. Also about 6 weeks after taking Met I ovulated on my own for the first time.
I never did experience any of the bad side effects and I still continue to take Metformin. I would say start slow and work your way up to avoid the bad side affects that some people experience.

New On Board
Hello All,
I have PCOS. Today has been an exciting day. I visited the infertility clininc today and should start taking metformin tomorrow. I have taken metformin some time ago but I got terrible nausea. I hated it. This time the doctor gave me the time release version and I hope that it works. Anyone has any advice or suggestions? What should I be looking forward to? I am glad to be on the chat...It is lways good to have support. Good Luck! DreamofBaby |

I have been taking Metformin for a year. I had lots of gastric side effects. My RE switched me to the extended release version in August and I have had much better luck. I have not lost any weight and I have not ovulated on my own. However, I have heard of people losing lots of weight and I have heard of lots of people ovulating on their own.
I hope it works for you!

I too take Metformin and unfortunately have the bad side effects. I was to start with taking one 500mg pill a day and work my way up to 3 a day (a total of 1500 mg). Well I couldn't do it. I am able to handle the two a day, but that's it. So my RE said to just stick with that. It does seem to be helping. I have noticed less facial hair, which was my biggest complaint. I haven't really noticed much weight loss, but definetely a decrease in appetite. Good luck and I agree with the above. I say start off slow and work your way up.

I'm new to this forum, but have been diagnosed with PCOS for almost 15 years, but obviously had it since the age of 12-13. AF came once, then never again until the doctor put me on BCP.
About 7 years ago, I was lucky enough to find a doctor who actually listened to what I was going through and was willing to try some of the new therapies on me --- metformin being one of them. There are only two ways I have AF --- extreme dieting w/ a huge cut in fat intake, which is almost impossible to maintain; and metformin. For the first few years, though, I kept going on and off of metformin. The side effects were terrible. Over a year ago I was put on ER Metformin 1500 mg a day. The ER made a world of difference, but I found it hard to remember to take 1 pill 3 x daily. So, since I've been lurking on this board and found out that some people take all 3 of their pills at night with dinner, I just have to write and say --- THANK YOU! I am actually taking 1 in the morning before work, then 2 with dinner and life has become suddenly so much easier!! I have even fewer side effects now that I'm not taking them 3 times a day, and haven't forgotten to take them once. With all of that said, I just wanted to let you know I'm loving this forum. Great information, practical tips, and I'm just glad to read about others who know what it's like to be me. ~Brigitte |

I have been taking 2000mg Met. since Nov 2005.
In 2006 I lost 28 lbs and didn't do anything different other than taking Met. (this is after YEARS of WW and other failed attempts at loosing weight). My acne is GONE GONE GONE. I also take the Extended Release (Metformin ER) version, after gastro problems with the plain stuff. I take it ALL after dinner and have had NO problems since the first month I started. I have ovulated on my own and concieved naturally since going on Metformin. I would like to start the official "I love Metformin Club" ![]() Hope this helps. Love, Julie

metformin...how soon?
I am only on my second month of metformin. I started with 2 pills a day of 50 mg. My ob was so happy about my decreased levels ( I am insulin resistant) that he changed my dosage from 50 mg to 750 mg...twice a day. I had a period this month...and it was actually red! Not the brownish on and off ones that I have been having since losing some weight. My question is, this cycle wasn't constant...it was rather light, but red nonetheless..should I use an opk this month? or just BD and hope I ovulated? OPK's are hard for me because cycles are few and far between...help!

Julie I am definitely for the I Love Metformin Club. I have been a user of the Metformin for 4 years off and on. The first 2 years I lost a lot of weight. I wen from a 16 to a size 8. I stopped taking it and BLAM! I gained it all back and more. My PCOS was kicking in overtime. I was on the regular stuff and now on the extended release. I am taking only 1000 mg a day. 2 500mg pills a day. I take one in the morning with my breakfast and the other at dinnertime at work before I leave just in case I get sick I will not have to be in the bathroom all night. One thing that helped me was to take some of my pills to work and have them out right where I can see them so i would know to take it. Hope you do better than I Deveney.

New to the PCOS forum
I've been taking metformin for a few months now. Last month my re uped it to 850mg three times a day. I've noticed less facial hair and my ezema on my face is getting better. I've also lost weight-mostly on my upper body.
It does give me nausea though. I just take it with food. I used to be on 500mg and could take that on an empty stomach. |

metformin
Hey, i have been on metformin for 6 mos. and i also have pcos. i have lost about 30 pounds since i started the metformin! It has also helped me with ovulation. My doctor started me on clomid. when i reached 150mg and still hadnt ovulated he added the metformin. I have been ovulating regularly since the first month on both. As for the side effects i havent had any. I have to say that i did try metformin a few years ago and i experienced severe bowl problems. it was so bad i wouldnt leave my house for the two weeks. As soon as i stopped taking it i was fine again. I told my current doctor that i didnt want to be on metformin because i didnt want to go through that again. I have to say that i am so glad i gave it another chance! It all depends on the person. Good luck!
