I totally agree with you about the Metformin stomach issues. I was dx w/PCOS 4 years ago, and I started Metformin for months before I decided to quit taking it. My main reason for quitting was the stomach problems it caused. I'm thinking of just sucking it up and getting back on it if it will help. I don't think my PCOS is severe because I have regular cycles, every 28 days. My DR said that I'm not that overweight, but I'm going to try to lose it if that will help too. Any suggestions on how to deal with the stomach issues if I go back on Metformin?

I've been on Metformin for about 6 months and it has yet to give me normal periods. I still have to take Provera to bring that on. The side effects of it are HORRIBLE !!
Does is make anyone else feel differant ? If I forget to take it for a few day's, I pay for it when I start back on it. I hope at some point it will do its job and make things more normal for me, I just havent seen that yet.

I've been much more short tempered while on it ? Im not sure if its just stress with all the infertility issues or the drug ?

Not taking Met as prescribed may be causing some of your problems, both with irregular periods and with intestinal discomfort. The intestinal discomfort should start to subside after a week or so of consistent treatment. If you're not on the extended release version, get on it! That also helps a lot with the side-effects. Also, I don't believe that it will regulate your cycles unless you are getting a high enough dose on a consistent basis. My dosage had to be increased in order to reduce my cycle length. However, Met is not for everyone and if it doesn't work for you, then hopefully your doctor can find something that does. Best of luck!!

I've been on Met for about three years. It has never induced AF. Instead, like some of you, I have had to take other meds to have a period. Still, my doc keeps me on 2000mg of Met a day. I have not lost weight while on it; I have actually gained about 30 pounds. The side effects subside after a few days of consistantly taking the med as prescribed, but I have found that if your diet consists of a lot of unrefined sugars, the stomach discomfort (and worse) insues. Is there something else out there that can work for me since I have not had success with Met? What about Clomid? Can anyone tell me about it? My IF issue is PCOS and endo.

If there is one thing I have learned from all of this, it is everyone is different and we tolerate and react to medications differently. met can work really well for women but not everyone. If you are not insulin resistent, I am not for sure of the benifits. My advice it to talk with your RE. The thing about PCOS is that there are an array of symptoms, and we can present with only one to many of them.

I know for me I am not insulin resistant, but I am annovulatory and I have the classic PCOS ovaries. My PCOS has also increased my prolactin level. :-( My RE is going to start me on clomid and Parlodel (to bring down my prolactin).

I agree that we must advocate for our health and in our case our fertility. Be open with your RE, and talk about all of your options.

Take care ladies,

Kate

I have been on Metformin since October 2007 and it has not made a bit a difference for me. I am taking 1000mg daily and I am not insulin resistant. I still have to take provera every month to start period so I can take my clomid, getting ready to start 4th month of this. I am now on 100mg of clomid and still not ovulating. I am a little overweight as well 5'4" and weigh 160 lbs. The met has not helped with weight loss either. The stomach issues were not so bad if you gradly increase your dose and then do not miss any and watch what you eat. I found dairy messes me up the most if I eat a lot. Good luck to all you ladies ttc.

Oh ladies I have been having issues this past week. I had to stop taking Met because of my gallbladder/appendix surgery and was off of it for over a week. Now that I have started it back up I always have to know where the closest bathroom is. It is horrible I hope it calms down soon. I was on since November before this so I didn't think it would be such an issue to stop and start it. I am down a total of 30lbs since starting it in November, so we will see how everything else works out. You can look at my siggy for more info.

Hello. My name is Renea. I am 28 yrs old. I am new to this site. I am also on Metformin. I have been taking 850 mg twice a day for 3 months and I still haven't had a cycle on my own. I have to take provera to induce my cycle. I just finished my first round of clomid 2 weeks ago. I have definitely felt different since taking the clomid. Im praying that I ovulated this month.
