If you have PCOS make sure that you take metformin!!

When I started this IF journey over 2 years ago I did not have regular periods. Went to my ob and tired clomid, it didn't make me ovulate or get AF. Then I went to an RE and we eventually did IVF (also had male factors) However, prior to doing IVF I started metformin and I ovluated for the first time in years! Well, after I gave birth to my twin IVF daughters I got back on metformin. 2 weeks ago I had symptons that I was ovluating (CM) and I got my period yesterday! I wish that back two years ago my dr put me on metformin. Now, I am going to continue to take it to see if I get my period back on a regular schedule.

I just wanted to post this in case there are other ladies out there suffering from not ovluating. I am a thin girl and have no symptons of PCOS- that is one reason why I think that I was not prescibed metformin earlier.

I am the complete opposite. I took metformin for years and it never made a bit of difference with me. At my first appointment with my RE he told me I could stop taking it if I wanted because it didn't make a difference with my body. Then finally after all of the failed clomid. I was pregnant with my first IUI. But I know that for a lot of women metformin works wonders. I'm just not one of them.

babycowlover: here is a link to a very helpful site about metformin...it helped me understand it all better because sometimes the Doctors speak a different language when it comes to this stuff...
Metformin for PCOS: Discover the Benefits and Side Effects of Glucophage.

Good luck and PM me if you have any other questions?

Trying 7yrs.

Hello There! This is my first time on this site. My name is Melissa and I am 40yrs. old and have been trying for 7yrs. to conceive. Four yrs. ago on Mother's Day I found out that I was pregnant. I had a miscarrige on my wedding aniversary which was May 19th. I had a DNC and the Dr. said that it might help me become more fertile. But here I am 3 yrs. later and still no baby. I had finally given up and decided to work on my weight loss. I have seen a Dr. that put me on a 1200 calorie diet and has prescribed me 500mg Metformin for weight loss. I have been reading how Metformin benefits and aids in infertility. I am wondering if I should ask my obgyn to prescribe me clomid. I have a Dr. appt. on March 13th. Should I as be taking a higher dose of Metformin? The only problem with this is they are 2 different Dr. Help, I need some advice.

I'm going to be very blunt with you... if you have been TTC for 7 years and are 40, I would RUN, not walk, to the nearest RE (reproductive endocrinologist). They specialize in fertility and can do a full workup and treatment plan. There is no point in treating your IF if you don't know what is causing it. That would only result in wasting valuable time.

Metformin helps people with PCOS to regulate their cycles, which may lead to ovulation. Many of us require additional treatment to get our BFP's though (see my signature below).

Best of luck on whatever you decide to do! I hope you get your BFP soon!

PS - If you don't know all of the abbreviations yet, you can click at the "acronyms" link at the top of the page.

Left out important detail

I'm sorry I left out one important detail. ( like I said I am new at this) I have been through all kinds of infertility tests and my husband has even been checked to and is alright. Been on clomid for two six month periods ( without the Metformin) and no luck. When I got pregnant 4yrs. ago I was on nothing at all, just started exercising and trying to eat right. But now I am a quite bit heavier than I was back then. My Doc also said that I did not have PCOS but I have a lot of the symptoms (weight gain and irregular periods) What I was thinking is I am already on Metformin for the weight loss so I thought I could ask my doc to see if he would put me on Clomid again just to see what the two together would do. I'm just confused at what to do. But I guess it won't hurt to try.

I too believe in Met for that BFP...and I'll take you one further- dont stop once you get that BFP!

I am skinny PCOS too...my blood work didnt present for PCOS. But my ovaries act exactly like PCOS ovaries. So after about 5 months of IF treatement, my RE said I could try Met if I wanted. I said hey, for 10 bucks a month what the heck. Three months later i got a BFP on a natural cycle. I believe it was the Met.
Here's another thing. After 6 weeks i had a super healthy bean...RE could not say one bad thing about it. Even said, he "never sees MC with these numbers" . He told me to stop taking the Met and I did. My bean passed 2 weeks later...just about the time that I was done weening myself from the Met. Now, I can't prove it was the Met...but if God gives me a next time, I will NOT stop the Met until after 12 weeks. I highly suggest any of you out there that finds your self in that situation do the same. It can't hurt, and all the signs seem to say for some it really helps prevent mc in PCOS women.

Cool

I wasn't so lucky with Metformin, my RE rx to me back in March of last year to help me with my weight and cycles, after 6 months of no weight loss or AF (had to use provera every month to induce it) he told me to stop taking them because it wasn't doing anything for my body. I was really hoping because I read all the success stories but unfortunally it doesn't work for everyone...I'm now using other resources (see my signature)...

Well, after reading all this, it makes me want to insist to get on metformin. I had asked my RE about it and she said that she doesn't prescribe it unless they are insulin resistant. But as you can tell from my sig. I'm still not pregnant without it. So I'm thinking that maybe I need to be a little more firm with her. I work with an ob/gyn and he's suprised she doesn't have me on it. What do you girls think?

It is not about doing more tests to assess your infertility that going to an RE helps, it is that they (RE) know how to help progress you through the steps to hep get you PG. Being that you have been trying for a while you may need to move beyond clomid.
