HCG drop question--2nd trimester
Dear All,
I have not visited this infertility forum in the longest time, since conceiving after 4 years secondary infertility in Dec. 2006, but I do remember the support I received and now I am hoping for some insight into our current situation. I am currently 14 weeks pregnant...this pregnancy was a complete surprise, since we weren't TTC and didn't think we could without serious assistance...anyway I progressed well through the 1st trimester, lots of nausea too. Friday morning I woke up to a gush of blood, as soon as I stood up to grab the phone blood just started pouring out. We had just seen the baby's heartbeat on U/S the previous day...good and strong, everything was normal less than 24 hours before. Went to the ER and they diagnosed a nearly 50% placental abruption, but baby was still doing well. Strong heartbeat, movement was normal. We returned the next day to the ER for increased pain and 2nd U/S revealed baby was still fine and new radiologist said he saw a large subchorioinc hematoma under the placenta, but no abruption noticed. That seems a bit confusing and never got and clarification to that...HCG levels were done both days and a drop of over 11,000 miu was noted. Friday was 87,000...Saturday was 76,000. cervix was still closed, but bleeding has persisted at the level of a moderate period. So, does anyone have any insight about the drop in HCG levels...the ER doc was strongly suggesting that a MC is imminent, but wouldn't give more details. Has anyone else experienced such a drop...is it really alot? I've never miscarried before...and it seems like forever before we see another doctor tomorrow. Thanks in advance for any help. Warmly, Kristi

hCG levels drop after the 9th to 12th week. Here is a site that I hope makes you feel better. Looks like your levels are right on track. BTW, ER Drs. are idiots when it comes to pg (well, at least mine was and I would always follow up with a ob). They misdiagnosed my ectopic the day before it ruptured.

Kristi - I don't know much about hcg levels that far into pregnancy but I have heard (as it has been noted by other members) that they do level off at a certain point.
I'm sorry you are going through the "unknown" right now but stay strong and keep up posted. Marilyn |
