Cytotec???

Was anyone given Cytotec to help the M/C process? I'd love any input on your expierence.

I was prescribed this to get things going as I have waited all weekend after stopping my prometrium and metformin. The Dr/Midwife prefer I take this before I have a D&C. They say there is less effects/infections from this versus the D&C.

I ended up chosing the D&C as I'd heard conflicting things about the cytotec. Mainly that is can cause very painful contractions and that it can sometimes cause infection? But then again theres also that risk with a D&C.

Did the doctor say what to expect when you take the cytotec?

Hi Colee, sorry you are having to go through this.

I hope I don't scare you with my experience. I really don't want to worry you, but I want to give you an honest answer. I was given Cytotec after a missed miscarriage and within a few hours of the meds being inserted, the miscarriage was in full force. I'm so glad they had advised me to go home straight away. I wasn't prepared for how much I passed and the pain was very intense. You may pass some very large clots and quite a lot of them. My ob-gyn didn't perscribe any pain meds, so please make sure you ask for something to help manage the pain and have a loved one stay close-by. The worst of it was over in a few hours however I was still bleeding heavily for a few weeks until I asked them to agree to a D&C. I just needed closure. Some people don't end up needing the D&C, but I had a feeling that it was going to be a long process otherwise for me.

I feel terrible telling you all this, but I wish I had a better understanding of what was going to happen beforehand. I wish my ob-gyn had been clearer on what to expect. I understand that there is less chance of problems with cytotec than D&C as far as uterine scarring etc..

I am so sorry again for your loss.

Thanks for the replies.

Well I chose the D&C but the night before pre-op I had lost a few clots one the size of a golf ball we thought it was it and done. Went to the pre-op had an ultrasound done which still showed the sac. The dr encouraged me to take the medications. I tell you it was better to talk to an OB in person than the stinkin' midwives over the phone that didn't sound like they really cared of my well being. So I took the meds after battling with my emotions for almost 2 hours, and I took some pain meds within 30 mins after taking the medication, then 2 hrs or so later I started contracting took IB because it was uncomfortable, almost unbearable and within 15 mins or so after taking the IB everything was done and over with so really the IB didn't hit until 30-45 mins later. Had an u.s to comfirm everything passed yesterday. So our peanut finally grew it's wings yesterday 8/6 (i say that because right before I jumped in the shower yesterday morning i had passed one more "clot" but it was grey in color. described to the dr and he said that was def. the sac, it sunk to the bottom of the toilet before I had a chance to get it to take to the dr) All in all my expierence with this medication wasn't bad and I have very minimal bleeding, the dr feels its because I had spotted on and off for over a week.

I again thank you for your replies.
