Empty Sac after IVF Anyone?

I was wondering if anyone has had an empty sac after IVF. I was told this is common with IVF.

I finally got my and I was waiting for my first ultrasound. I was having light bleeding and cramping, so I scheduled an early ultrasound at 5 weeks. The doc (who was not my RE) said that it looked abnormal. He said that my sac was not round but rather oblong shaped, it didn't show a fetus, and it was small. He said I should check my HCG level. It was 7800. He said I should have a visible fetus on the ultrasound with an HCG level at 7800. He recommended I take Misoprostol to induce a miscarriage.

I told my RE what he said and he agreed on the phone that it looked grim. However, he said, "It will probably miscarry on its own."

So I have this medicine, and I am scared to take it. I heard it is painful. I am worried that I am acting too soon? I don't know.

If it is grim, then I want to take the medicine so I can get started on trying to get pregnant naturally with my husband sooner. I don't want this doomed empty sac to delay me any longer. On the other hand, I wonder if there's hope for this little sac? The doc said it is definately not a viable sac.

Anyone ever had similar problems?

What were your early beta numbers?

I think it’s too early to take any drugs, generally they schedule a follow-up U/S if they suspect a problem.

early betas

I didn't have any betas because my RE is a hole in the wall and he doesn't do all that. The IVF itself only cost $1800. He's cheap.

If he doesn’t do basic blood work maybe he is not the best person to be making this kind of decision. I would get a second opinion in a few days or a week from another OB/GYN or go to a ER for a U/S.

RE and no blood work

My RE is the one who said not to take the drugs. He said if it is going to MC then let it go naturally.

I went to another doc for the drugs. He's the one who got my HCG at 7800 and told me it was doomed.

follow up US

I had another US done today and they said everything looked really good. I'm still spotting, though. I'm very worried about all the spotting =(.

I had a yolk sac and a fetal pole. And it was round. I'm glad i didn't take the MC medicine. Yeesh.

dropping the embryos

I was so upset when he told me about dropping three of my embryos. However, I was very happy he told me the truth! I wonder if every RE is as honest. He said in the 20 years he's been doing this, he's only ever spilled embryos once before. He offerred to do a free cycle if I didn't get pregnant. He was very sorry for spilling them!

So glad you didn't take the meds!!!!!! My heart skipped a beat there reading your post. At 5wks all you are supposed to see is a sac, and no viable sacs are not always perfectly round. Any Dr that advises ending a pregnancy before 7 to 8 wks should be questioned. Some babies are just slow starters. Glad your follow up scan looked good
Hugs

Thank goodness you didn't take the meds.

Grumpy,
I was reading holding my breath that you would say you went to another doctor and didn't take the meds.

Do you have any other appts. scheduled for bloodwork or another U/S?

Also, I do agree with you, although extremely upsetting that your doctor dropped some of the embryos, at least he was honest, which unfortunately, I am sure many would not have admitted that mistake.

KUP!

I will keep you in my prayers!

Grumpy,
I was just thinking.... did they check your progesterone level at all when they did the blood work? Many times spotting is due to low progesterone levels and all you need to do is use progesterone suppositories or injections. The progesterone keeps the lining fluffy in your uterus to support the embryo/fetus.

You may want to call someone and have your level checked, or find out if it has been checked. This is a simple fix for many who experience spotting.

Take Care!

Are there alot of RE where you live. I was reading your tag; he dropped them on the floor. I only had three eggs fertilized and if it was me I wouldn't have any left. With all that aside I am praying for you and you little bean to pull through.

After my FET in September we had positive, but low betas in initially. We had an u/s at 6w5d that showed an empty gestational sack measuring 5w1d. We were told there was very little hope, but to come back in a week for another u/s to make sure. The second u/s showed the same thing and I chose to have a D&C instead of miscarrying naturally. Personally, I think you should wait a week and get another u/s, just in case. Otherwise you might always wonder.
