Question Confused.

I am 28 years old and have had 3 miscarriages. My first was in June 2000. My second was December 2, 2007 and I was 9 weeks along. And my last was December 4, 2008 and I was 7 weeks along. My doctor thinks that it might be my hormone levels and is thinking about putting me on progesterone. I feel kinda stupid because I do not know anything about hormone levels or any of that stuff. No one else in my family has had any problems with losing babies so I feel a bit alone and in unfamiliar territory. Honestly my husband and I are wanting to try again but I am terrified of going through the pain of losing another pregnancy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First of all, I'm so sorry four all your losses - that must be so difficult. I can maybe give you a little information about the progesterone piece. Somtimes women who seem to be able to get pregnant but have repeat early miscarriages have what's called a luteal phase defect ( you can search this site and find out more information). Basically, once you get pregnant the cells in your ovaries that surround each egg are supposed to produce progesterone until the embryo/placenta can make enough on its own. The progesterone holds the uterine lining in place - one progesterone levels go down, the uterus sheds its lining. If the ovaries stop making progesterone even though you're pregnant, but the embryo/placenta hasn't started making enough, you can lose the pregnancy. Taking progesterone supplements, either with vaginal suppositories or injections, can help get you through that period of time.

Have you seen an RE or only your OB/GYN? If you're reaching the end of your rope and want an answer as far as the reason for all the miscarriages, it may be time to consult a fertility specialist. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your help. When I lost the baby last December I had only been going to my regular family doctor but I finally realized that he was not helping the problem so I have been seeing an OB/GYN since then. She is the one that suggested I try progesterone and she also said I might have to have a shot because my blood type is A+ but my husbands blood type is AB- and she said that could cause a problem during pregnancy.

Great to hear you are on a role with finding out your problem. I just started seeing a RE about a month ago and can't believe how much more information i have gotten.
Good luck!

Dear, Mindlespindle! First of all I'm so sorry about your losses. I know how you feel since I had 3 losses myself before I had my baby boy 3 weeks ago. My advice to you to go to see RE and get you and your hubby checked. Even that all our test came back normal and we still don't know why I had 3 miscarriges, but we did some treatments and now we have our son! When I was pregnant with my son I was on progesterone for the first 12 weeks of my pregnancy, even that my RE didn't put me on it since he doesn't believe that it will do anything to provent misc., I asked myself to use it just to be on a save side. So I don't know if progesterone helped me or not, but you can try. But the point of using fertility drugs for us was - it for me to produce more eggs so I have higher chance of getting pregnant and to carry till full term. Good Luck!

I would ask to be tested for autoimmune problems. I had several miscarriages in a row and it was finally discovered that I had antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. As soon as I was put on blood thinners during pregnancy, I was able to carry my daughter to 36 weeks and my twins to 37 weeks. Good luck.
