What to expect when you are expecting a miscarriage
I found out yesterday at my 6 week ultrasound that I have a blighted ovum and therefore am not pregnant. I have stopped my progesterone injections and estrogen patches and after discussing with my doctor, have decided to miscarry naturally - forgoing medication or a D&C. I am terrified about having a miscarriage and don't really know what to expect. I have read online but was hoping someone wouldn't mind sharing their experience with me so I know what to expect. If I don't start to miscarry within a week, my doctor wants to put me on medication that will make me miscarry. I appreciate anyone sharing their difficult and emotional experience with me.

I too had a blighted ovum in September. My RE wanted me to miscarriage naturally but after 3 weeks, nothing was happening.
After going in for another ultrasound and seeing that the sack was still developing and not nearly going anywhere the doctor gave me a pill to take to start the process. I took the pill- nothing for about 8 hours and then I started bleeding very heavily. My husband ended up taking me to the ER and my RE scheduled an emergency D&C which left me with severe anemia because I had bled out. After the D&C I felt much better but had really bad swelling in my legs and bad anemia. I was tired for about a month and I actually looked forward to my "mini-break" from all things infertility. My RE made me wait two cycles and I will have an appt. next week to discuss my FET.

Thank you both for sharing your stories. Peabody 1 - good luck with everything tomorrow. I will keep you in my thoughts!
If nothing happens by next Tuesday then my RE said he wants to give me a pill that will make the miscarriage happen. He also indicated I would need to take 2-3 months off. The break will be good. I am an emotional wreck! First, so sorry this has happened to you. I know EXACTLY how you are feeling.
First m/c-blighted ovum located after bleeding had started. Natural miscarriage. HCG levels did take around 3.5 weeks to go below 5, started around 900 Second m/c- heartbeat stopped. Did the "pill" insert. Worst, absolute worst experience of my life. I will never do that again, Ever. I was throwing up, curled up in a ball on the bathroom floor for 3 hours with the most horrible pain imaginable. My husband thought I was dying. It is called Cytotech and it was horrible for me. Don't do it! Bled a ton that day, then tapered off in a about a week. I will do a D and C from now on, should this happenagain (gosh I hope it doesn't). I wish you the best and I am so sorry.

I haven't miscarried before but wanted to post that my thoughts & prayers are with you. I am only 4 1/2 weeks & just found out this past weekend, but started bleeding today. It's too early to tell what's going on, but I understand your feelings too well. Hang in there.

I have had two natural miscarriages and three D&C's. Given the choice, I would choose to go the D&C route. I was given Cytotec as well on my third miscarriage and it didn't work at all for me other than to give me severe cramps. It didn't soften my cervix which is what it was supposed to do and I didn't pass anything naturally. My natural miscarriages involved alot of bleeding and heavy cramping and were quite painful and emotionally taxing. With the D&C's, I woke up with very little flow, cramping that lasted maybe an hour or two and then it was light flow for about a week, like a normal period. I would ask your doctor about a D&C rather than the Cytotec, maybe that way they can do a pathology to find out why. Hugs, sorry for your loss

It will be okay
I just had a miscarriage...it literally ended 2 days ago. Don't be afraid...it's more emotional than anything else. I just finished my 3rd round of IVF and the day I went in for my pregnancy test (2 weeks after transfer), I started bleeding. I tested positive for being pregnant, but started bleeding that very same day. As the week wore on, my levels went down and the bleeding got worse. While they couldn't "confirm" it until my levels were below 20, the miscarriage lasted about 10 days.
I had a miscarriage in July as well (almost same scenario as above). I'm so sorry for your loss but don't be afraid of the physical aspect. The harder thing to deal with is the emotional & psychological part. I spent a lot of time with my therapist, and with friends & family. I also went on Xanax for about a week and that helped. Best of luck to you and don't worry, it will work out one day. |

Thank you!
Thank you everyone for sharing your stories with me - I know it isn't easy and I really appreciate everyone opening up. I have started cramping up today so I can only assume mine is about to start.
