Lost my boys at 5 months...quesitons

A week ago I lost my healthy twin boys at 5 months. After years of trying we were blessed to get pregnant with our first IVF cycle. Everything was fine unitl about a week before we lost them I had spotting and we found out I was 4 cent. dialated with baby A (Lucas) literally falling out. They did an emergency cercloge (sp?) due to an incomp. cervix (which was a complete surprise). It lasted for about a week until I had spotting again along with some contrations and was dialated with our little Lucas's bag being broken (and again he was in the vaginal canal). After waint about 24 hours we were told that due to the threat of infection to me we had to deliever both of our little angels.

I do not question why this happened, I have great faith in God and know that my boys were needed in Heaven for a reason. I was lucky enough to be able to hold them and say goodbye which I know some do not get the chance. This does not take the pain away, but I find peace in it.

We have not even started to think about what is next for us, but I just had some questions.

I guess the hardest part is the fact that they were healthy and there were no warning signs before it was too late. Has this happened to anyone eles? Have you gone on to have full term pergnancies? Has anyone had a cercloge placed earlier and it work for full term? Why does this happen?

I guess just hearing others stories would help. You are all such brave women, and it is difficult when you are the only one that you know to go through this.

Thank you for your help, anything words would help at this point.

Lucas

I am so sorry you've been through this. Even with great faith, loss of this magnitude is hard to deal with. A friend of mine recently went through the same thing, losing a singleton at 26 weeks. Sadly for her, she had warning signs that her cervix was incompetent that her doctor (who also apparently is incompetent) failed to appreciate.

On the positive side, now that this is known to be a problem, you can have the cervical stitch put in early, which should allow you to carry to term should you choose to go through this again.

Kathryn.

Hello - I am very, very sorry for your the loss of your twins. I know exactly how you're feeling as I lost twin daughters back in October. If you would like to talk, please feel free to PM me.

My pregnancy loss was also a complete surprise, as I had an uncomplicated pregnancy up until week 20, when my world came crashing in. One of my girls was found to be 2.5 weeks behind developmentally than the other so I was placed on complete bed rest. Three days later, I started bleeding and went into preterm labor and delivered 48 hours later. It was a horrible time and, like you, I was greatful to be able to hold them in my arms and say goodbye. We also had a funeral for them as well, and it was good to have the support of many family and friends. I hope you have all the support you need.

It sounds like you have great faith, which will help get you through everything. It certainly has helped me. My best advice is to take it one day at a time. My OB suggested we wait 4-5 months before trying IVF again and my RE recommended the same. We will have FET this March. Take the time to heal not only physically, but emotionally as well.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. There are two others on this forum that have lost twins at about the same time. It's so unfortunate to go through the struggle of infertility, finally see your dreams coming true to have them come crashing down. I'm so thrilled though to read your message and see that you do have a great faith in God and trust that everything has happened for a reason, even if we don't understand it at the time. I have a friend who was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix after going into labor 8 weeks early with her first child. With her second pregnancy she was advised to get the cerlage between 12-16 weeks and it held it's course until they removed it the month before her due date when her child could come and be considered term. I pray that the Lord will continue to give you strength and guidance in this time, I pray that you and your husband are blessed with another strong and healthy pregnancy that results in a healthy and beautiful baby to love and cherish for all the days of his/her life.

I can't speak from personal experience and cannot begin to imagine what you went through, and I'm so so sorry for your loss. A very close friend of mine went thorugh the same thing, when at 21 weeks she went into labor and lost her baby girl, due to an incompetent cervix. The sad thing there as well was that she had already had one healthy pg and a litle girl, but had been monitored closely the 1st pregnancy as she'd had some infections when younger. Anyway, she wasn't monitored the 2nd pregnancy and lost the baby. But the good news is, she got pg again, had the cerclage, and now has a 4 month old baby girl. So, if you choose to continue on this journey there is a very simple procedure they can do for you. I wish you the best of luck!

Catherine - I am so sorry for your loss.

I too lost my twin boys at 20w5/6d. My Perinatologist explained that earlier in the pregnancy when I had gotten a UTI that this weakend Ethans membrane and when they went into the growth spurt about 19w that his weakened membrane was not strong enough to handle this and broke. they gave me antibiotics to get rid of the UTI but the damage had already been done. they also flooded me with antibiotics for 48 hours and put me on permanent bed rest. i was able to hold on to Ethan for 12 more days, Andrew came 33h1m later - they tried to stop his delivery but Ethans delivery had already brought an infection into the uterus and trying to keep Andrew would have killed me or taken my uterus from me.

If you are ever interested in talking, please let me know.

You will find great support here!

i am so sorry to hear about your loss. It is heartbreaking. Take your time to heal and start afresh. keep the faith. It is really surprising on the part of your OB that the incompetent cervix was not flagged off early. Usually the routine ultrasound indicates that the cervix is thinning out and a cerclage is required. My cervix began to thin out at week 19 and it was 3 cm then. My doc told me that i could go in for the cerclage at that time. we decided that we would go for the surgery right away. After the cerclage, i felt much better though i have been mostly on bed rest throughout my pregnancy till now. I would suggest that next time you get pregnant, opt for cerclage at 12-13 weeks itself so that the chances of preterm labor are reduced considerably.

Good luck.
