I am looking to start discussions here or on another board regarding Premature Ovarian Failure. I am 29 years old, diagnosed at 27. I know there have to be others out there that have been diagnosed... I have many questions... about creating a family, if there is any hope of concieving on my own or through IVF. I am set up for donor egg IVF right now... but would like more information about POF and to see what other women's experiences are.

I don't have POF, but have read a lot about it because I am dealing with autoimmune infertility myself. Without being too long-winded, I urge you to look to see if you have an autoimmune conditions which causes POF. Some women have AOA- anti ovarian antibodies which attack their ovaries causing POF. This can be treated and reversed by having an immune workup and if indicated treating the over active immune system which is the underlying problem. RIs (reproductive immunologists) treat this and have success (I've heard of women reversing super elevated FSH and conceiving). Hi Mcandyvonne! I had a question for you...I was just wondering if you went through IVF? If so did you have to take Estrogen for the first 3 months because of the POF?

I read your message, and I too struggle with infertility. However, I don't know if we share the same problem. The problem I have is that I do not ovulate. I am 26 years old and have a 19 month old son. My husband and I tried for 2 years before they said I don't ovulate. Is this the same thing? I ended up getting pregnant using the fertility drug Clomid (it took 3 tries) and now that we are trying again, I am having even more trouble. I have finished my third cycle, and my doctor has advised me that I need to go see an infertility specialist. Do you (or anyone else) know what treatment comes after Clomid? Do I have to do IVF?? I am a nervous reck and would love to talk to someone. Thanks so much

I read your message and I am in the same boat. I am not ovulating. You don''t have to move directly to IFV, you can try IUI first. Have you tried that? You can do IUI with some injectable hormones which are supposed to make you ovulate. Don't worry yet. Schedule an appointment with an RE. Unfortunately for me, the last IUI did not work and the RE has recommended that we move on to IVF.

I don't have POF, but I'm not far off. My RE says that my egg quality is deminished. I have been advised to try IVF with donor eggs.

Thanks for responding. Would you tell me what IUI is?? I have heard of it, but don't really know what it is. Just trying to educate myself as much as possible. Have you tried IVF yet? Good luck with it and keep your fingers crossed!

Ladies, sorry I have been gone for a while... I underwent donor egg IVF and now have a beautiful son. I am more than happy to share that story with anyone.

Donor Egg IVF was expensive... we took a risk and have a large loan to repay. So large that it will be another 3 years of payments... which makes a second attempt for a second child impossible at least for a long time. What I am currently attempting to research is getting my FSH levels to come down and ultimately getting pregnant on my own without having to pay thousands of dollars. I think for me I wanted to have a baby so badly that when the doc said I could get pregnant with egg donor IVF I immediately was on board without trying to figure why I have POF at 30. (Diagnosed at 28)

Does anyone have info? Anyone have sotries of folks getting pregnant after being told it would be immpossible with your own eggs?

last year i didn't have a period for 3 months so i went to the dr and took a progestin pill for ten days i had a progesterone withdrawl bleed then one more period and then no period for 2 more months then another pill cycle. my dr ran tests in july and october my fsh was 12.02 and lh was 14.85 in jul. then 12.83 and 5.44 in oct. i had a period every month about 28 d apart since jan this year and now it's sept. and all of the sudden i haven't had a period in 7 weeks neg hpt. could this be early signs of this condition? or any ideas what the problem could be?

I think it is terrific that you were able to concieve.

I was diagnosed with POF 1 year ago at the age of 34. My dilemma is, I would like to conceive a child, however I am still single, and just wondering if the longer I wait, will my chances to conceive through egg donation dwindle.

What's even more interesting is the reproductive specialist pretty much shurgged his shoulders because I am single, so I guess he feels like why should I even bother to try?

I am 34 and was diagnosed with POF about four months ago. My FSH levels were at 49 the first test and 28 the second. My OB immediately referred me to an RE, who started me on twice daily injections (Gonal-F). Most women do these injections prior to an IVF cycle (typically producing lots of eggs). I had only three decent follicles from the medicine, did one round of IUI, and got pregnant. Forty-nine is a very high FSH number, and neither my OB nor my RE were very hopeful. In fact, my OB was so negative and disinterested once she found out I had POF, I am switching to a new OB for this pregnancy. Ladies, please do not give up hope. (Also, my state has mandatory insurance coverage for infertility, which is great.)

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with women like me that aren't very clear on what our options are. I am 28 years old; was on the pill for 10 years (was put on it to regulate my period) ... have been off for over a year and my hormones never kicked in. I have been working with a bioidentical hormone specialist in California - not for pregnancy, just because I felt so horrible and no one could tell me why. I feel better physically, but know I will feel crummy again if I stop taking hormones. My doctor said I have to stop taking everything for 1 month so they can check my levels to determine if I have POF (though I am pretty certain at this point that's what's wrong). Does anyone happen to know if that is the case or if there are other ways to diagnose? Thank you again for all the valuable information.
